The officer who had taken Vivica's statement stood up and handed a document to Joseph. "Mr. Baird, so Ms. Lynn is your client. We've just finished her statement. This is the referral for a medical examination. I'm sure you're familiar with the procedure, so I won't waste your time."
Joseph took the form and nodded. "Thank you."
He then turned to Vivica. "Let's go. Time for your examination."
"Okay," Vivica replied, feeling like a schoolgirl being told what to do. She followed him out of her seat.
They had barely taken two steps when Riley, who had been waiting silently, shot up from her chair. "Officer! Why does she get to leave? She filed a false report and slandered us! Shouldn't she be held accountable?"
Joseph stopped and turned, his eyes fixing on Riley. The piercing intensity in his gaze made her flinch and instinctively shrink back.
An officer snapped at her, "What are you shouting about? Sit down and be quiet! It's your turn. Let's go, into the interrogation room!"
The officer grabbed Riley's handcuffs and began pulling her toward the room.
Riley's bravado evaporated. Her face crumpled as she pleaded with the officer. "Please, officer, I have a two-year-old daughter. She's at preschool, and her class is about to end. I have to go pick her up."
"You can do that after you give your statement. Have a family member get her."
"I can't, officer. I'm a single mother. I don't have any family..."
Vivica watched her, a faint smile playing on her lips. "What happened to all that arrogance, Riley? I have to say, I much prefer you when you're acting like you're above the law."
"How did this happen? The police mentioned domestic violence. Did Fletcher hit you?" His voice was stern, laced with a tight anger.
Vivica nodded. "He was trying to grab my phone to delete the video. I'm lucky I sent it to you in time."
"You reacted quickly," Joseph conceded, "but didn't I tell you not to confront him directly? He might be impotent, but he's still a man. Did you really think you could win a physical fight against him?"
In the driver's seat, Roderic's eyes flickered to the rearview mirror in surprise. In his experience, his boss was a man of few words. Except for courtroom arguments, he was always concise with colleagues and clients alike. This was… different.
Vivica was taken aback by his scolding. She pursed her lips before admitting, "I did it on purpose."
Joseph’s eyes narrowed. "What? Do you have a masochistic streak?"
