The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 148

Vivica was confused. “Can that also be used as evidence?”

“These actions could fall under another charge—extortion through familial blackmail,” Joseph explained concisely. He looked at her. “If that charge sticks, your father will be looking at more than just three years.”

He paused, watching her reaction before continuing. “So, the decision is yours. If you want him to be locked away for longer, give me all the evidence you have.”

Vivica stared at him, speechless for a moment. This was something she had never considered. For years, her parents had guilt-tripped her, and she had almost been brainwashed into believing that it was a child’s duty to give their parents money. She never imagined that once it crossed a certain line, it could become a criminal offense.

“Mr. Baird, I need to think about this,” she said after a moment of contemplation.

An idea was forming in her mind. Since both her best friend and Joseph suspected she wasn’t her parents’ biological child, she wanted to get a DNA test.

If the results confirmed they were her parents, she would have to consider, to some extent, the bonds of family. After all, they had raised her. If she had them both thrown in prison over money, it would seem heartless.

But if she wasn't their biological daughter, then the whole situation would change. Who were her real parents? How did she end up with the Lynn family? Why had Zebulon and Evelyn never told her? It could unravel a much deeper, more serious truth. In that case, she would let the full force of the law decide Zebulon’s punishment.

Joseph gave her a knowing smile. “It seems you’re going soft after all.”

“No, it’s not that,” Vivica clarified. “I want to get a DNA test first.”

Joseph’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he quickly understood her reasoning. “Fine. I get it. Let me know when you’ve made up your mind.”

Melanie fumed as she sat up in bed. “I have to go see her. The poor girl, beaten by her own family and now laid up in bed with no one to look after her.”

Joseph stopped his parents. “She’s in a lot of pain right now. Don’t go over just yet; let her rest. And have a couple more of the household staff come to the hospital. Both mother and child will need looking after for the next few days.”

Melanie nodded emphatically. “You’re right. We’ll arrange it right away, don’t worry.”

She then fixed her gaze on Joseph, a curious look on her face. “You seem quite concerned about Vivica. Does this mean after spending some time with her, you’ve started to feel—”

“Mom, you’re letting your imagination run wild again,” Joseph cut her off flatly. “I’ve just never met someone so unlucky. I’m merely curious to see how many more tragedies can befall one person.”
