The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 149

In response, Melanie grabbed the pillow behind her and threw it at her son.

“With a mouth like that, no wonder you’re single,” she huffed.

Joseph caught the pillow without a word.

The noise woke Chaim, who had been sleeping in Melanie’s room. He sat up, rubbing his eyes.

Sheridan immediately draped a small jacket over the boy’s shoulders. The gesture was so natural and effortless; it was clear they already adored him as their own grandson.

“Grandpa, is Mommy back?” Chaim asked.

Joseph walked over and lifted the small boy into his arms. “Mommy’s hurt, Chaim. She needs to rest in bed for a few days, so you’ll be staying here with Grandpa and Grandma, okay?”

“Mommy’s hurt? Did Grandpa and Dad hit her again?” Chaim asked instinctively.

Melanie’s ears perked up at his words. “Chaim, do your grandpa and dad hit your mommy often?”

Chaim looked at Melanie, a sad expression clouding his young face. “Grandpa is always mean to Mommy when he wants money…”

Before he could finish, a nurse knocked and entered the room. “Mr. Baird, the patient next door, Ms. Lynn, tried to get out of bed and fell again.”

“What?”

Joseph’s expression darkened instantly. He turned and strode out of the room, still carrying Chaim.

“Oh, you poor thing,” Melanie sighed, her heart aching for her. “How could this happen? Your parents are monsters. How could they do something so horrible to their own daughter?”

She turned to her husband. “Sheridan, call Prof. Jefferson and see when he’s free. Ask him to come take a look at her.”

Then, she turned back to Vivica to explain, “Prof. Jefferson is an expert in osteopathy. No matter how serious the injury, he can work wonders with just a few adjustments.”

Joseph nodded. “I forgot Prof. Jefferson specialized in this.”

Vivica had been suppressing a deep well of despair, only allowing herself a few stolen moments to cry in private. But now, being showered with such genuine concern by the Bairds, her nose began to sting, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Melanie’s kindness and sympathy felt like the purest form of motherly love she had ever experienced. For a moment, she had an overwhelming urge to collapse into Melanie’s arms and weep.
