Dr. Warren looked at him, surprised. "One in four for a perfect match. Most are half-matches."
"That low?" Joseph asked, taken aback.
"That's actually quite high," the doctor corrected him. "With current medical technology, a half-match is sufficient for a successful transplant. For an unrelated donor, the probability of a match is somewhere around one in tens of thousands."
Joseph fell silent.
Dr. Warren looked at him, confused. "Mr. Baird, why do you ask? The child was conceived through a sperm donor, wasn't he? How would they find the biological father?"
"No reason, just curious," Joseph said with a polite smile. "I'll let you get back to your work. We can talk more later."
"Of course," Dr. Warren replied before walking away.
Joseph stood motionless for a moment, lost in thought, before turning and pushing the door open.
Vivica quickly tried to compose herself, but Joseph could still tell she had been crying.
"Mr. Baird, you haven't left for work yet?" she said, trying to make small talk. The grief over her son's prognosis had momentarily overshadowed the awkwardness of the previous night.
He walked closer, his expression grave. "I heard what Dr. Warren said about Chaim. Don't be too pessimistic. There might be another way."
Vivica caught the hidden meaning in his words and looked up at him. "What other way?"
Vivica stared at him, her shock even greater than when he had announced he was sleeping in her room.
Their eyes locked for a long moment before Vivica, certain she hadn't misunderstood, asked in disbelief, "Are you saying… I should have a baby with you?"
Joseph couldn't quite read her reaction—she looked almost… repulsed. His cool demeanor snapped back into place. "Can you think of anyone more suitable?"
Vivica's brain shut down. She stared at him, unable to form a reply. To save her son, she would do anything. But to have a child with Joseph…
This was a monumental decision that would change both of their lives forever.
No, not both of them. Three of them. And what of the child, born out of a sense of duty and a desperate mission?
