She knew that in the real world, many parents had another child to obtain cord blood for a transplant to save an older child with leukemia. But those were married couples, for whom having children was the most natural thing in the world.
But her and Joseph… They were practically strangers. To have a child so rashly—she didn't mind, she had no intention of marrying again anyway. But what about Joseph? As the eldest son and sole heir of the Baird family, he was expected to marry a socialite from a family of equal standing to carry on the family name. What heiress would accept the fact that he already had a child?
Unless, of course, the secret was kept perfectly.
Vivica's mind was a chaotic mess. Before she could figure out how to respond, her phone rang, jolting her from her thoughts. She glanced down and saw it was her mother. She frowned. "I think my mom is on her way to the hospital."
"Hello…" she answered, purposefully omitting the word 'Mom.' Ever since she started suspecting she wasn't their biological daughter, she couldn't bring herself to say it.
Evelyn, needing a favor from her daughter, didn't dare pull rank. She forced a smile, even though Vivica's tone was cold. "Vivica, I'm almost at the hospital. Which room are you in? Are you with Chaim?"
At the mention of this, Vivica suddenly remembered something crucial—she couldn't be in this room. If her mother saw her staying in such a luxurious private suite, she would undoubtedly throw a fit out of jealousy.
"I'll text you the room number in a bit."
"Can't you just tell me now?"
"I forgot. I need to ask someone," Vivica lied before hanging up.
Joseph was getting ready to leave, so Vivica quickly put down her phone and called out to him. "Mr. Baird, I'd like to move to a standard room."
Joseph turned back. "Why?"
"My mother is coming, and I'm afraid she'll cause a scene and disturb your parents. Besides, I don't want her anywhere near Chaim."
Vivica explained the situation to Sheridan and Melanie, then had a nurse move her to a semi-private room on a lower floor. The other bed was empty.
Evelyn arrived shortly after. Seeing her daughter in a standard room, she frowned. "Why are you staying here? You're not short on money anymore. You should be in a better room."
Thanks to Professor Jefferson's skilled hands, Vivica's back had healed enough for her to slowly get out of bed and move around on her own. But in front of Evelyn, she didn't want to reveal that, so she remained lying down.
"This room is fine. There's no need to waste money," Vivica replied flatly.
Evelyn set down the insulated container she was carrying. "You're right," she said, suddenly agreeing. "This room is nice. You shouldn't be reckless with your money."
Vivica didn't respond. She knew her mother wanted her to save every last penny of those millions for her precious son.
