“I’ll finish up my work at the office and then head to the airport this afternoon to get my car,” Vivica explained.
Joseph held the passenger door open for her. Once he was in the driver's seat, he dismissed her plan. “You don’t need to run around. Just give me your car keys. You remember the general area where you parked, right? Send me the license plate number, and I’ll have someone pick it up.”
“That’s too much trouble,” Vivica declined. “It’s easier if I just go myself.”
“But it’s not safe. What if the highway is icy?”
“There’s so much traffic; it should be fine.”
“The traffic is what worries me more,” Joseph said casually as he started the engine and pulled out of the parking spot. “If I have the means to prevent it, I won’t let you take any risks. Especially now. You need to take care of yourself and prepare your body for pregnancy.”
His argument left Vivica with no room to refuse. Getting Chaim the treatment he needed was their top priority. So, she followed his instructions, placing her car key in the center console and sending him a message with the approximate location and license plate number.
“I was worried I’d forget where I parked, so I took a picture. I’ve sent you everything.”
“Good. The car will be home by tonight.”
Vivica nodded and murmured her thanks. Recalling her conversation with Melanie from the day before, she decided it was time to talk to Joseph about it.
“Yesterday… Melanie said a few things to me.”
Joseph kept his eyes on the road but responded, “About us?”
“Yes. She knew you went to Glenburgh for work and then made a special trip to Sydville to find me.”
A faint smile touched Joseph’s lips. “That’s my mom for you.”
Vivica pressed her lips together, still trying to figure out how to phrase her next words.
“What?”
“I’m asking, if this wasn’t about saving Chaim, would you be willing to marry me?”
Vivica’s heart sped up. She couldn't meet his gaze and quickly turned her head away. With his status, and with in-laws like Sheridan and Melanie, what woman wouldn’t be willing? Even she, who had been burned by marriage and had sworn never to marry again, was starting to fall for it.
But if she said yes, would Joseph think she was materialistic and vain, only interested in his status and the Baird family’s background?
Vivica dodged the question, playing a little game of her own. “I was the one asking you. How did this turn into you questioning me? Whether we’re willing or forced, there’s no other choice.”
Joseph didn’t reply, but the line of his jaw tightened. He hated how she always evaded his questions.
“But I can promise you this,” she continued, “I will treat you well and do my best to make our marriage work. However, if there ever comes a day when you no longer want to continue this marriage, or if you meet a woman you truly love, you can just tell me. We’ll get a divorce.”
