Vivica's intention was to convey that she would cherish their marriage and respect him, but she would also honor his choices and not cling to him. No matter what, she would always be grateful to Joseph and the Baird family.
But Joseph’s face grew even tauter after hearing her out. “How generous of you,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Vivica heard the mockery in his tone and pursed her lips, saying nothing more.
As the car pulled up in front of her office building, she turned to get out. But Joseph spoke again, his voice sharp. “In my world, there is no divorce, only widowhood. Think carefully, Vivica. Once you marry me, you’re bound to me for life.”
Vivica froze. After a few seconds of silence, she frowned. “So I can choose not to marry you?”
“Not marry me? Then you can be the one to tell my parents. If they’re fine with their grandson being an illegitimate child, then I have no objection,” Joseph retorted, his expression and tone icy.
Vivica was speechless. The man was being completely unreasonable. He was the one who wanted to get married and give her a proper title, but now he was the one threatening her to think twice. And when she called his bluff, he threw Sheridan and Melanie in her face. It was blatant emotional blackmail.
Realizing what he was doing, Vivica snapped back, “So you’re not giving me a choice, then why even ask the question?”
Joseph scoffed. “And now you’re angry.”
Yes! Vivica was angry. “It must be an occupational hazard from being a lawyer,” she shot back. “You love talking in circles! It’s infuriating!”
With that, she slammed the car door shut and walked away.
Joseph sat there, stunned by her outburst. He let out a cold snort, watching her retreating figure and muttering through gritted teeth, “Ungrateful woman.”
Holly lowered her voice. “Do you think Mr. Smith actually has a thing for you? I mean, he came all the way back to the hotel just for you, and then you were already gone.”
Vivica glanced around, worried that other colleagues might overhear. “Holly, let’s not speculate about things like that. He’s so far away; it’s impossible.”
“I think so too, but the way he acts around you is just… strange,” Holly mumbled before turning back to her work.
Vivica didn’t give it another thought. Mr. Smith was all the way in Sydville. Even if he did have some strange ideas, it had nothing to do with her.
She refocused on her work. By noon, her colleagues started leaving for lunch, but Vivica remained at her desk. She wanted to finish the remaining tasks so she could go straight home for a meal.
“Vivica, you have a visitor,” a voice called out suddenly from the entrance.
