Vivica was a little surprised that her young son would ask such a question. His other grandparents hadn't been particularly loving toward him.
Unsure how to explain, Vivica decided to tell the truth. "Your old grandpa and grandma were that daddy's parents. Your new grandpa and grandma..."
Before she could finish, Chaim piped up, "Are this daddy's mommy and daddy! I know that!"
Vivica was momentarily speechless.
But the little boy continued, "And, I have two daddies, too."
Then Chaim suddenly asked, "Mommy... will I have two mommies too?"
"No," Vivica said without a moment's hesitation. He could have two of everything else, but he only had one mother.
Chaim thought for a moment. "I don't want another mommy anyway. I only want you. You're the best mommy in the whole world."
The child's sweet words made Vivica beam, and she couldn't help but pinch his cheek. "You little charmer. And you're the best little boy in the whole world."
After that lighthearted diversion, Vivica didn't try to explain the two sets of grandparents again. He would understand when he was older.
Just as they finished their chat, they arrived at the hospital. While waiting for the elevator, Raymond called again. It was clear that her absence was making them all anxious, afraid she might have changed her mind and wouldn't show up.
Raymond didn't take credit. He would never forget the kindness Aunt Hillary had shown him when she'd been his lifeline, saving him from debt after his first business failed. In fact, his current success was largely thanks to her support.
It just went to show the good and bad in human nature. The two Chase brothers would scheme against their own flesh and blood, even resort to murder, for money and power. Yet Raymond had treated his aunt and uncle, to whom he had no blood tie, like his own parents, caring for them day after day.
While others were busy chasing fame and fortune, he remained steadfast in his sincere devotion. If Hillary and Hayes hadn't found their daughter, their entire fortune would have gone to him. Yet even with such a massive inheritance at stake, he had done everything in his power to help Vivica and her parents reconcile, willingly relinquishing a fortune.
So when Hillary thanked him, it was from the bottom of her heart.
"Vivica may have married well now," Raymond said, "but she suffered a lot over the years, and her first marriage caused her a lot of pain. It's a good thing we found her in time to make it up to her. My parents only had me, but now I have a cousin who feels like the sister I never had. I’m happy to finally have someone to look out for."
