Walking the red carpet, swarmed by reporters.
Gracing the covers of financial magazines, looking like the picture of respectable success.
All that glory should have belonged to her biological father, but it had been entirely stolen by someone else.
"Vivica? Vivica Lynn?" Holly called out a few times when she noticed Vivica staring at the phone, completely zoned out.
Vivica snapped back to reality.
"What's wrong? Did the news piss you off too?" Holly took her phone back, grumbling indignantly. "If illiterates can turn their lives around like this, what's stopping the universe from making me rich too?"
Before Vivica could respond, her phone rang.
It was Quintina.
She grabbed her phone, stood up, and walked away.
She could pretty much guess why her best friend was calling; she'd probably seen the news too.
Once she was outside the office area, Vivica answered, "Hey, Quintina."
"Vivica, I just saw this news about the Chase family's corporate crime ring in Sydville City. Why does it sound exactly like your scum-of-the-earth uncle and his brother?"
Quintina loved gossip; it was her favorite way to decompress from work.
So whenever a major story broke, she was always first in line for the details.
Vivica didn't want this blowing up, nor did she want her colleagues knowing she was directly connected to this trending topic, so she kept her voice as low as possible.
"Yeah, that's them. Technically, the case is still under investigation, so it shouldn't be public yet. I have no idea how it leaked online."
"Ugh, in the age of independent online media, nothing escapes the internet's radar. It was probably leaked by someone high up in the company. Two bosses getting arrested at the same time? Everyone's going to freak out."
"Maybe."
For someone who had been a stay-at-home mom for three or four years and had only been back in the workforce for a few months, stepping in to run a multi-million dollar manufacturing enterprise was way out of her league.
If she were actually forced to take on that responsibility, the anxiety would give her insomnia every single night.
Besides, she didn't have the energy to deal with it; she needed to focus on Chaim's medical treatments.
Thinking about all this, Vivica couldn't help but sigh.
"Joseph said this morning that the company is a mess and they might need my mom to step up, but she's just not well enough..."
Quintina caught on immediately and asked in shock, "So... does that mean they want you to inherit the company?"
"I don't know..." Vivica said honestly, "But I don't want to."
"I don't want you to either! If you move to Sydville City, how are we ever supposed to hang out?!"
No matter how easy travel was these days, long-distance friendship meant that seeing each other would become a luxury.
