What? Vivica’s eyes flew open, and she stared at him in utter disbelief.
“What… What do you mean?” she stammered. “Why would you help me?”
Joseph’s gaze dropped for a moment, as if he were still weighing his words.
Having been so deeply hurt by her own family, Vivica found herself on the receiving end of kindness from strangers, and it made her suspicious rather than relieved. She thought of the kind couple from the other day, and now Joseph’s incredible offer. It didn’t feel real.
“Mr. Baird?”
Joseph blinked, his focus returning to her. His gaze was steady as he delivered the shocking news.
“Ms. Lynn, it’s like this. Your son is my brother’s last living descendant. My brother was killed in the line of duty, and our entire family has been devastated. My mother, in particular, has been overcome with grief, and her health is failing. I was hoping you might allow your son to spend some time with her. In return, I will provide him with the absolute best medi—”
“Wait!” Vivica cut him off, her mind reeling.
The shock on her face was impossible to hide. She stared at the man before her, struggling to process what he had just said. She understood every word, but strung together, they felt like some bizarre, nonsensical dream.
“You’re saying my son… is your brother’s… last descendant?” Vivica’s heart was hammering in her chest, her words coming out slow and disjointed. “Your brother is—was—?”
“My brother was a firefighter. He died tragically during a rescue operation.”
What?! Vivica felt another jolt of shock, her eyes widening.
All the disparate threads were weaving together. Vivica pressed a hand to her head, overwhelmed.
My God. She had been unknowingly entangled with the Baird family all along. The coincidences had formed a perfect, inescapable circle.
Joseph nodded. “Yes. My mother has been hospitalized for some time now. She can’t accept my brother’s death, and her grief has made her very ill. It must have been fate that brought your son to them at that moment.”
“But… how did you find out? And how can you be so sure my son is your brother’s? I mean… maybe it’s just a coincidence that they look alike.”
Even in her state of shock, Vivica needed answers.
