Such a monumental claim required irrefutable proof before she could even begin to believe it.
“Our first encounter was an accident. Your son was lost and ran into me. Dr. Tyson commented that he looked like me, but I didn't think much of it at the time,” Joseph explained. “Later, when I went to the fire department to collect my brother's personal effects, I found a sperm donation qualification notice among his things.”
He took out the document and handed it to her.
Vivica took it, her brow furrowing as she examined the paper.
“I had a friend look into it,” Joseph continued. “My brother’s sample was used four years ago. It was right around that time that you contacted me through Prof. Christie, seeking my help with your divorce and mentioning that your child was conceived via a sperm donor…”
“So you suspected me back then?” Vivica asked, surprised.
“No,” Joseph shook his head. “As a lawyer, I don’t believe in speculation. I only trust evidence.”
“It was Dr. Tyson. He saw my mother clinging to my brother’s photograph, crying day and night. Out of pity, he told her there was a little boy on this floor who looked just like him. My mother came to see the child in secret, and from that moment on, she became… obsessed. She believes he’s the reincarnation of my brother.”
Joseph recounted the recent events calmly and methodically. He understood Vivica’s shock and skepticism and knew that he had to be completely transparent to earn her trust and convince her to let the child interact with his family.
She remembered the story of the firefighter’s sacrifice; he had died so young, saving a comrade. It was a tragedy that a stranger like her felt so deeply; she couldn’t imagine the pain his family, like Joseph, must be enduring.
As the pieces fell into place, her fear dissipated, replaced by a glimmer of hope. She had been at a complete disadvantage in her divorce from Fletcher. Now, her son's powerful, high-society “uncle”—a renowned lawyer, no less—had appeared out of nowhere. Suddenly, she felt like she had backup. She was no longer afraid of Fletcher trying to take her son.
Joseph waited patiently for her response. When she remained silent, he prompted her again. “Ms. Lynn, can you agree to my request? Or, if you have any conditions, please feel free to state them.”
That was the opening Vivica had been waiting for.
