The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 70

“Don’t you dare!” Vivica said quickly.

“Then tell me who he is! How do I not know you have a friend who’s so charming and handsome? He’s a hundred times better than Fletcher!”

“That’s Joseph Baird, the famous lawyer,” Vivica said.

“What?” Quintina exclaimed, her voice shooting up an octave. The man in the room glanced over, and she quickly ducked back, covering her mouth as she whispered into the phone, “You mean he’s the divorce lawyer my uncle recommended?”

“Yes.”

“But… didn’t he turn you down?”

“Hold on, let me find a better place to talk,” Vivica said, realizing this wasn’t a conversation she could have in a few words. She stood up and walked to the stairwell.

“So much has happened this morning. You’re not going to believe it when you hear it.”

“Tell me, tell me! What happened?”

Vivica took a deep breath and recounted the main events of the morning. As expected, Quintina gasped and exclaimed at every new revelation.

“See! What did I tell you? The moment I saw that news report, I thought that firefighter looked exactly like Chaim! No, I mean, Chaim looks like him…”

“You know what this is? It’s fate. It’s like the universe felt sorry that he died so young and arranged for his bloodline to continue, even bringing you and his family together.”

“That scumbag Fletcher has finally met his match! Mr. Baird will definitely help you now. You can take him for everything he’s worth, leave him with nothing and no heirs. We’ll see if his ‘true love’ sticks around then!”

Quintina laughed triumphantly, but after her initial excitement, a more practical concern arose. “But Vivica, are you sure it’s safe to let Chaim be alone with the Bairds? What if they try to take him from you? Fighting them for custody would be a thousand times harder than fighting Fletcher. You could never win against the Bairds.”

Quintina’s fear was the same one Vivica had been grappling with. But she had come to a decision.

“They say a parent’s love for their child is about planning for their future. If the Bairds want Chaim to be a part of their family one day, that might be a good thing.”

Before Vivica could finish, Quintina understood. “You think Chaim will have a better future with them.”

“Of course. The Bairds can give him opportunities I could never dream of. He’d have a much better life than he would with a single mother. Just in terms of his medical care, the resources they have access to are beyond anything I could imagine.”

As long as her son was happy and healthy, it didn’t matter if he was by her side. A mother’s love wasn’t about keeping her child close; it was about wanting him to fly as high as he could, to live a life full of joy and freedom.

“Vivica, you’re such a good mother,” Quintina said, her voice filled with emotion.

...

“It’s raining outside. It’ll be hard to get one now.”

“It’s fine, I can take the subway.”

After a few days at the new job, Vivica had a general sense of her colleagues. Zavier, who was a few years her senior and highly capable, was rumored to have been engaged once, but the relationship ended for unknown reasons, and he had been single ever since. It didn't feel appropriate to be alone in a car with him late at night. She was in the middle of a messy divorce and didn’t want to invite any unnecessary complications.

When the elevator reached the ground floor, she quickly said, “See you tomorrow,” and hurried out before he could say anything else.

Outside, the rain was coming down steadily. She pulled a small umbrella from her bag and opened her ride-sharing app. Zavier had been right—it was nearly impossible to get a ride in the rain. The app showed dozens of people in the queue ahead of her.

Her phone rang. It was Ruby. She quickly answered.

“Hello, Ms. Lynn. Are you still at work?”

Ruby’s shift ended when Vivica arrived at the hospital for the night. Since she hadn't shown up yet, Ruby was calling to check in.

“I’ve just left. I’m trying to get a ride. It might be a little while, Ruby.”

Just then, a large, black SUV pulled up beside her and honked softly. She stepped back, and the driver’s side window rolled down, revealing a familiar face.
