It was Zavier, the man she’d just parted ways with in the elevator.
“Vivica, get in. I’ll give you a ride. It’s impossible to get a cab at this hour.”
Vivica really didn’t want to impose. But Ruby was waiting anxiously, and she wanted to get back to the hospital quickly. She still needed to take Chaim to see Joseph’s parents, and this delay…
“Alright then, thank you.”
She walked around the front of the car to the passenger side. She quickly told Ruby she had a ride and hung up.
During the drive, Zavier hesitated several times before finally asking, “So… are you planning to get a divorce?”
Vivica froze and turned to look at him. Zavier offered a small smile and explained, “At lunchtime, I was having a smoke in the fire escape and happened to overhear you on the phone.”
So that was it. Vivica felt a pang of annoyance. She had specifically checked the stairwell to make sure no one was there before speaking so openly with Quintina. She’d been careless after all.
“Yes. Our marriage has broken down. There’s no point in forcing it. A divorce is better for both of us,” Vivica said in a flat tone, not wanting to elaborate.
Zavier nodded. “I understand. But you’re such an amazing and supportive partner. Losing you will be his loss. He’ll definitely regret it one day.”
“Perhaps,” Vivica replied noncommittally.
Fletcher had hurt her too deeply. All she wanted now was a clean break. Whether he regretted it later was of no concern to her. She would never go back.
The rain caused heavy traffic, and the journey was a crawl. By the time they reached the hospital, an hour had passed. The rain had stopped.
Like a true gentleman, Zavier got out of the car to open Vivica’s door for her. Uncomfortable with such treatment, Vivica quickly opened it herself and stepped out.
“Zavier, thank you for the ride tonight,” she said, nodding politely.
It wasn’t that they were malicious or nosy. It was just that Vivica was in the middle of a divorce, and it was crucial for her to be careful. If Fletcher found any leverage against her, it could be disastrous.
Joseph shot a cool glance over. “He looks like a ride-share driver to me.”
Roderic thought to himself, “He’s obviously not.” But he didn't dare say it out loud.
Joseph's comment was meant to defend Vivica, but in truth, he had his own doubts. A beautiful young woman, trapped in a four-year marriage with a husband who had… issues, never experiencing intimacy—that had to be more torturous than being single.
He couldn’t help but wonder: could Vivica really have endured four agonizing years of celibacy? Frankly, even if she hadn't, he felt it would be completely understandable.
...
When Vivica returned to the hospital room, Chaim was already asleep. Ruby was yawning, exhausted. After a brief handover, Ruby left.
