He forced a calm, reassuring expression, as if it were a simple gesture of friendly support. "Don't worry," he said softly. "We'll find a way."
Vivica's heart had begun to race, a blush creeping up her cheeks. But seeing his open and sincere expression, and how he withdrew his hand right after, she realized she was overthinking it. For a man as proper and serious as him, it was merely an act of comfort.
Still, the warmth from his palm, though it lasted only a few seconds, felt like a spark that quickly chased away the cold enveloping her.
"Ms. Lynn, please rest assured, these two options aren't mutually exclusive," Dr. Warren continued. "We can start with chemotherapy to control the illness while we search for a suitable donor. In a way, the chemo buys us more time for the transplant search."
His explanation clarified things for Vivica. She nodded. "I understand. I was just getting ahead of myself."
"It's completely understandable," Dr. Warren said kindly. "Every mother wishes she could bear the suffering for her child."
Having practiced medicine his entire life, he had seen countless tragic cases and empathized deeply with the families.
"Clinically, we often recommend transplants from relatives or suggest the original couple have another child and use the cord blood. Both methods are much faster than waiting for a donor from the national registry."
Dr. Warren paused, a frown creasing his brow. "However, I understand the patient was conceived via a sperm donor, which makes both of those options unlikely. So, for now, chemotherapy is our best course of action."
Vivica remained silent, a profound sense of regret and self-blame washing over her. She shouldn't have given in to Fletcher's pleas for an IVF procedure with a donor. Now Chaim had no siblings to turn to for help.
In truth, Joseph's mood was just as grim. After all, Chaim was his own flesh and blood. Even if he could have other children in the future, he couldn't bear the thought of losing the only descendant he had now. He had grown attached to the boy over the past few days. The thought that Chaim might not be cured, that he might leave this world so young, felt like acid eating away at his own heart.
His words offered Vivica no comfort. "But what if it can't be solved?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Joseph's eyes flickered as he fought to control his emotions. "If it can't be solved, then we have no choice but to accept it."
Vivica's eyes welled with tears, and she quickly looked down. After a moment, she said in a muffled voice, "Your parents have finally found someone to hold onto. If Chaim doesn't make it... they'll be hurt all over again."
Joseph let out a dry laugh. "Even at a time like this, you're still thinking about others. It’s no wonder that scumbag husband of yours walked all over you."
