Following the consultation, Chaim’s treatment plan was officially adjusted. Dr. Warren recommended a combination of several chemotherapy drugs, a method that could more effectively control the disease.
But the side effects were severe. The little boy lost his appetite and began to vomit.
Watching him so listless after being sick, Vivica had to secretly wipe away her tears. Sometimes, when Chaim felt particularly unwell, he would cry for his mother. Unwilling to leave his side, Vivica had to take time off from her department.
Joseph was busy with work, but no matter how swamped he was, he always made time to visit Chaim.
He was surprised to find Vivica in the hospital room one morning. "You're not at work today?"
Vivica looked up, equally surprised to see him. "No. Chaim was throwing up badly this morning and wouldn't sleep unless I held him, so I took the day off."
After her quiet explanation, she asked, "Is it a slow day for you?"
"I have a court hearing this afternoon, but my morning is clear," Joseph said, glancing at his watch. "Since you're free, why don't we go get the boy's last name changed?"
"Right now?"
"Yes. We can drop Chaim off at the North Wing with my parents."
Vivica wasn't in any real hurry to change Chaim's name, but she couldn't refuse after everything Joseph had done for them.
"Alright. Let me get his coat," she said, picking up Chaim as Ruby handed her a small jacket.
"Sweetheart, how about you go play with Grandma and Grandpa for a little while?" she asked gently while dressing him.
Chaim, who was feeling a bit better, nodded. "I'm going to build a battle tank with Grandpa today."
