The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 197

Before Petty could tear her eyes away, she caught a glimpse of a flashy Bentley pulling up to the port. The license plate was impossible to miss. Petty stiffened for a second, then quickly looked the other way.

On board the cruise ship, the heat was cranked up, finally cutting through the lingering chill. She let out a slow breath, but her heart was still pounding in her chest. Outside, the wind by the port was brutal.

Harris spotted Franco getting out of one car and Galen stepping out of another. Without even thinking, Harris walked right over to them. He nodded at Franco and greeted Galen with a calm, “Hey.”

Galen glanced awkwardly between Harris and Franco, both of whom weren't talking. If he’d known things would get so tense, he definitely wouldn’t have shown up. But someone had to break the silence, so Galen cleared his throat. “I saw the news about you going back to the company. Didn’t expect you to leave the hospital so soon, what happened?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Galen wished he could take them back. He’d only wanted to make things less awkward, maybe say a few harmless words. Instead, he’d gone right for the drama. He silently hoped Harris wouldn’t start bragging about stealing Franco’s girl right in front of him.

It was no secret to Galen: Harris was back at the company for Petty.

But Harris didn’t beat around the bush. He looked Franco in the eye and announced, “I’m going after Petty.”

Franco gave a cold, humorless smile. “What’s wrong with just standing guard outside her place every night? Thought you liked being her silent protector.”

Harris paused for a heartbeat, but honestly, he wasn’t surprised Franco had found out about his nightly visits. That night when someone tried to hurt Petty outside her building, Harris had been passing by, checking on her. Ever since, he hadn’t been able to shake off the worry. He’d started waiting downstairs every night, even hired bodyguards to keep watch. Aaron knew all about it. The only one kept in the dark was Petty herself.

“People always want more,” Harris said quietly. “At first I just wanted to keep her safe. But that’s not enough for me anymore. Especially now.” He met Franco’s cold stare head-on. “You two have too much standing between you… ugly history. She’s never going to love you again.”
