Laura lifted her hand slightly, about to speak, but Franco beat her to it. “Susan, take her inside,” he said.
Right before he walked away, his voice dropped a little. “After you have dinner, someone will tell you about Hans.”
Petty just stood there, watching them disappear into two different cars. She still wasn't sure why Franco wanted her stuck here, but at least he always kept his word. Sure enough, after dinner, Jay showed up at her door.
“Hans is safe for now. His uncle’s keeping him at The Green Family estate,” Jay said.
His uncle? The last time Petty saw that man was at The Eminence auction.
She gave Jay a curious look. “There’s some serious drama going on inside The Green Family. How do you know all this?”
Jay’s answer was vague. “Franco picked up on it. He said if Hans can’t even take care of himself at a time like this, then he’s no use to anyone.”
“So you’re saying Franco placed someone inside The Green Family?”
Jay didn’t reply. He just nodded a little and started to leave.
“Jay!” Petty called out after him. “I’m craving pie.”
“I’ll go out and buy one right now,” he said.
“I want it fresh, straight from the oven. Take me with you so I can pick.”
Jay barely hesitated. “Mrs. White, there’s no way I’m letting you leave Misty Vale. Franco left me here to keep an eye on you. You’re too clever for your own good and the others don’t stand a chance.”
Petty fell quiet.
…
Out on the road, two sedans drove side by side.
She felt someone’s eyes on her, heavy, intent.
So she squeezed her eyes shut, faking sleep. Wasn’t he supposed to be out with Laura? Why was he back already?
She listened as the footsteps drew closer. The mattress dipped behind her, the covers pulled away. Petty’s body went stiff. Then, all at once, a strong arm slid around her waist, pulling her in against a warm chest.
She could feel his heartbeat, solid and steady, pressing against her back. His breath brushed her neck, warm and close.
It was like she was wrapped up in him, surrounded on every side, his scent filling up all the space around her.
She couldn’t fake it anymore. Instinctively, she tried to reach for the lamp, but his voice came from right behind her, low and quiet.
“Did you eat enough?”
