Chapter 40
Chapter 40
“Austin said, “Lex, from now on, your name is Hill. You are a Mermaid, exiled by your kind for your physical impairment and rescued by Arthur. You must keep your true identity a secret.
He went on, “If Arthur bullies you, contact me immediately. I will come pick you up right away. I arranged a place for you at a school. Go there and study hard. Try to learn more words.”
“I have to go to school, too?” Lexie said, looking a little dejected.
“What’s wrong? You don’t want to?” Austin asked.
“Well… It’s not like that.” Faced with Austin’s question, Lexic could only force herself to agree.
After saying goodbye to Austin and Ryker, Lexie was reluctantly dragged away by Arthur, who kept rolling his eyes.
The moment Lexie and Arthur board the interstellar spaceship and depart, Austin’s gentle expression turned cold in an instant.
He stared at the horizon, took a deep breath, and then said in a deep voice, “Ryker, what’s the latest movement from the Aetherion Federation?”
“I heard a lot of bionic humans died in Nelson’s lab. All of them were half–finished products, beaten to death by the insane Nelson.
“Nelson’s gene disease is getting worse by the day. He’s scrambling to find someone who can cure him. He saw the video Lex posted on the Interstellar Net of her saving people.
“Now he’s sending men to hunt her down everywhere, but our agents have been intercepting them covertly.
“If he can’t find a cure for his gene disease soon, he won’t last another few years.”
Austin said, “Then let him die. Nelson is a man of deep scheming and ruthless tactics. To have such a man as an opponent is both my honor and my misfortune. But if he dies, I can get rid of a formidable rival.”
Austin paused briefly, then turned to Ryker and asked, “Ryker, how’s it going with Amya? Did she agree to cooperate with us?”
“She refused. She only has one month left, so she’s not intimidated by us. Amya said even though she hates Nelson, she still thanks him for giving her life. So she wants no part in the conflict between us and Nelson.” Ryker replied.
“Fine. I can take down Nelson without her help. Ryker, send someone to revise the female protection protocols. Make sure to maximize the interests of females.” Austin said.
“The Female Protection Protocol? There are barely any females left in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone now. What’s the point of revising it?” Ryker said.
“Just do as I say. I still have a mountain of work to get through. By the way, Ryker, do you think I’m that old?” Austin said.
“Beastmen in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone reach adulthood at 800. You’re only 982 now. You’re still young. Your age is nothing.” Ryker said.
“Is that so? But whenever I hear I’m 982, I feel I’m a fossil.” Austin said.
“Marshal Drake, you’re not old at all. Beastmen have long lifespans. Some can live up to ten thousand years, and the more long–lived ones can reach over a hundred thousand years. Compared to them, you’re barely out of your adolescence.” Ryker
said.
Chapter 40
“Really? Speaking of which, before the Clyssia Virus truly spread, beastmen’s lifespans weren’t this long, but everyone lived happy lives back then.
“But then this damn Clyssia Virus emerged. It wiped out all females because their bodies couldn’t adapt to it, while beastmen gained these extended lifespans because of it.
“Now all the females are gone, yet we beastmen live longer than ever. Is this virus a punishment sent by the Beast God? Is that why the Aetherion Interstellar Zone has become what it is today?
“There are no real females left in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone now. How long can our beastman gene chain hold on? A hundred years? A thousand? Ten thousand? Or even longer?
“But no matter how long our gene chain lasts, one thing is certain–the Aetherion Interstellar Zone is doomed to perish in
the end.
“Ryker, if one day in the future, a female who is immune to the Clyssia Virus suddenly emerges from some corner of the Aetherion Interstellar Zone, what would you think?”
“I’d be overjoyed, thrilled, grateful. Maybe even a little disbelieving. Ever since Ms. Graham passed away, we’ve all dreamed. of that day coming, but we never dared to truly hope for it.” Ryker said.
He went on, “If that day ever does come, I think every beastman in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone would go mad with joy. After all, it’s been our only obsession and hope for all these years.”
Austin said, “Yes, it’s the hope of all of us. Lex has such a high rank, and her ability to cure beastman gene diseases is so powerful.
“Sometimes, I can’t help but suspect that Lex is a real female. But then I think of that damned Clyssia Virus, and I have to bury that thought deep down.
“If only Lex were a real female.”
Listening to Austin’s heartfelt sigh, Ryker sighed silently to himself and said nothing.
To be honest, Lexie was so much like a real female that he had hoped countless times that she actually was one. Unfortunately, no matter how similar she seemed, she was not a real female.
But even if she wasn’t, it didn’t matter. As long as Lexie could live a good life, her vibrant presence alone was enough to add a ray of light to their dark world.
Ryker thought to himself, ‘Now that Lexie has left with Arthur, I wonder if she will be able to adapt to life out there.’
