The downtown shopping district was packed with people over the weekend.
To prepare for the showcase at the museum next week, Nora needed to find a specially tempered silver wire.
She had scoured several old material markets in the city, finally locating some stock at an imported supply shop in the central business district.
Stepping out of the supply shop, the sunlight was almost blinding. Nora carried a brown paper bag full of metal wire spools and walked along the pedestrian street toward the subway station.
"Nathan, I heard the line for the matcha crepe cake here is super long. Are you tired from waiting earlier?"
A sweet, delicate female voice cut through the surrounding noise, landing clearly in Nora's ears.
Nora's footsteps halted abruptly. She turned her head toward the sound and looked at an open-air cafe nearby.
Giselle, wearing a light apricot French-style dress, was sitting in a wicker chair. She held an ice cream cone, tilting her head up and smiling brightly at the young man standing next to her.
The young man beside her wore a clean white shirt, both hands carrying four or five massive shopping bags stamped with luxury brand logos.
He looked down, his eyes filled with undisguised indulgence and patience, as he pulled out a tissue and offered it to Giselle.
It was Nathan.
"Nathan, the ice cream here is so sweet. Have a bite," Giselle's coquettish voice drifted into Nora's ears on the breeze.
Nathan's ears turned red. He awkwardly tried to dodge, but under Giselle's slightly pleading gaze, he finally lowered his head and took a small bite of the ice cream from her hand.
