“Yes, but there’s more.” I point to the phrase about the sister witnessing the transformation. “You play a role too, Elara. Your powers–whatever they may truly be–are connected to this process.”
She looks momentarily uncertain, then nods with growing conviction. “In my visions, I always see myself present when Alexander becomes whole again. Not just observing, but somehow… participating.”
As we continue discussing the prophecy’s implications, trying to develop a plan for Alexander’s restoration, a disturbance ripples through the Cave. The whispers grow suddenly agitated, the silver light flickering as if in warning.
“Someone’s coming,” Dominic says, instantly alert, his hand moving to his sword.
“How could anyone have followed us?” Elara whispers, moving closer to the pool where we stand.
“We didn’t need to follow you,” a familiar voice calls from the entrance to the chamber. “We’ve been searching for this place for generations.”
Torchlight flares as figures enter the chamber–a small group led by a familiar silver–blonde figure in traveling clothes rather than her usual formal attire. Princess Selene steps forward, her pale eyes reflecting the silver glow of the pool.
Dominic positions himself protectively before Elara and me, sword drawn. “How did you find this place?” he demands.
“The same way you did, I imagine,” Selene replies, her gaze fixing on the amulet still positioned on the pool’s edge. “By following the trail of the Silverspiral legacy.”
To my shock, I realize she’s alone except for two companions–neither Vega nor Krell among them. The men with her appear to be ordinary guards rather than the ritual specialists who participated in the ceremony.
“Where’s Alexander?” I demand, stepping out from behind Dominic’s protection. “What have you done with his Alpha essence?”
Something flickers across Selene’s face–regret, perhaps, or shame. “Vega and Krell have taken him to a secondary location in the Northern territories, They plan to attempt the binding ritual again at moonrise tonight, using alternative methods since their first attempt failed.”
“Why are you telling us this?” Elara asks suspiciously. “Why are you even here?”
Selene hesitates, seeming to choose her words carefully. “Because I made a mistake. Because what I witnessed in that ritual chamber was a perversion of everything I was raised to believe about prophecy and destiny.” She looks directly at me. “And because I saw Alexander’s healing essence fade–saw the consequences of what my people planned in the name of justice.”
I study her carefully, trying to detect deception. “You expect us to believe you’ve had a change of heart? After leading the attack on my community? After participating in the ritual that tore Alexander apart?”
“I don’t expect you to believe anything without proof,” she replies evenly. “Which is why I’ve brought this.”
She gestures to one of her companions, who steps forward carrying a small ornate box. When opened, it reveals a key bearing the same spiral symbol as my birthmark and the amulet.

“The Silverspiral Key,” Selene explains. “One of three ancient artifacts my people preserved from before the division. The amulet you wear is another. Together with the birthmark you bear, they form a triad of power that can restore what was broken–not just Alexander’s dual nature, but the rift between our peoples that has existed for generations.”
“Why should we trust you?” Dominic demands, his sword still raised. “After everything your people have done?”
Selene meets his gaze steadily. “Because I was raised to believe in the prophecy above all else. And now that I’ve seen the true words, uncorrupted by generations of bitterness and ambition, I cannot continue supporting a perversion of its meaning.” She turns to me. “You’re his true mate. The silver bond exists between you. I felt it in the ritual chamber when both halves of him reached for you instead of me,”
The honesty in her voice is difficult to dismiss, but suspicion born of recent betrayal makes me hesitate. “If
you truly want to help, tell us how to find this secondary location. How to reach Alexander’s Alpha half before the second ritual.”
