Bonnie grew frantic.
"We must accompany our Lady! She is still recovering from her injuries!"
They had heard Physician Finch say that the blow to Lucia's head should have been fatal. It was a miracle she was even standing.
Both Bonnie and Celia were trained fighters. They had seen the severity of Lucia's wounds firsthand and knew the truth of the physician's words.
"I truly wish I could bring you both, but the carriage simply will not hold us all," Aurelia sighed, affecting a tone of helpless self-deprecation. "I am not trying to be difficult. Our family's carriage is just too small."
"We can walk alongside it," Bonnie offered immediately. Given their training, keeping pace would be effortless.
"Since you were sent by Prince Jareth's estate, you surely know where Princess Corinna resides. It is on the other side of the city. Walking there would take at least an hour."
Aurelia shook her head. "And if you arrive on foot, trailing behind our carriage, it will only invite mockery from the other nobles."
It would broadcast to the entire capital that House Beaumont was so impoverished they could not even fit their servants in a wagon.
Celia, maintaining her composure, offered a more practical solution. "We will go into the city and rent a carriage."
"By the time you find one, we will be terribly late. But if you must insist on following... I suppose that is fine. Lucia can ride with me first."
It seemed these two stubborn maids would not be deterred.
Lucia glanced at Aurelia before turning to her servants.
"Do not bother renting. Go directly to the markets and buy a carriage. Make sure it is comfortable. Take your time; you can simply pick me up when the gathering concludes. If neither of you knows how to drive, hire a coachman as well."
Aurelia had not been lying about the cramped carriage.
Lucia was fully aware of House Beaumont's mediocre wealth, though she had no idea how they had squandered their ancestral fortune over the years.
Having experienced the inconvenience of traveling without proper transport, she decided it was high time she procured her own.
"My Lady, are you sure you will be safe on your own...?" Celia and Bonnie exchanged anxious looks.
"I will be fine. Go."
