The spices inside were, in fact, a gift from Princess Corinna—exotic offerings presented to the royal court by envoys from distant lands.
Aurelia was immensely proud of the rare perfume. She rarely wasted a drop of it, only bringing it out for grand occasions like today. And now, Lucia was ordering her to throw it away?
"It stinks."
Biting her tongue, Aurelia forced a tight, condescending smile. "I suppose a commoner might find such a refined scent unfamiliar. But this is an exotic tribute, incredibly expensive and luxurious. Since you are in the Royal Capital now, Lucia, you must elevate your tastes. You cannot go about preferring cheap, vulgar scents, or high society will laugh at you."
"You talk too much."
With lightning speed, Lucia reached out, snatched the sachet from Aurelia's waist, threw back the carriage curtain, and tossed it right beside the coachman on the driver's bench.
"Leave it there. If you desperately want to wear it, put it back on after we arrive."
If she was forced to endure that suffocating stench in this tiny wooden box for the entire journey, she would lose her mind.
Furthermore, she could sense the unnatural composition of the spices—likely ground fish scales and crushed animal bones passed off as luxury. It was vile.
"Lucia!"
Aurelia shrieked, utterly unprepared for such brazen disrespect.
"Scream again, and I will throw it into the mud."
Lucia leaned back and closed her eyes, entirely ignoring her sister's outrage.
Outside, the coachman glanced at the pungent little pouch and immediately let out a massive sneeze.
Finally, someone had pointed out how awful the young miss's perfume smelled! But why must he be the one to suffer it?
Thankfully, the wind swept the worst of the odor away, making it somewhat bearable.
Aurelia glared at Lucia's relaxed, closed eyes, her own eyes practically spitting fire. She twisted her silk handkerchief so tightly her knuckles turned white, wishing nothing more than to tear Lucia limb from limb.
