This skepticism stemmed from an offhand remark Lady Beaumont and Aurelia had made. Prince Jareth would have to observe a year of mourning. Such a sudden betrothal likely meant that when the prince entered the palace, the old king was already on his deathbed. Wanting to see his son married before drawing his final breath, the king had forced the match. This betrothal was merely a hollow promise meant to comfort a dying man.
As for why they had selected Lucia? She possessed the title of a nobleman's daughter, but lacked any real standing. Her reputation could easily be sacrificed, and when the betrothal was eventually broken, the prince wouldn't have to worry about facing fierce opposition from her family.
If they had chosen any other noble lady in the capital, which high-ranking family would have allowed the prince to use their daughter so callously?
Lucia was chosen simply because she had already offended Prince Jareth, and he couldn't be bothered to look for anyone else.
So, did she actually think she was going to be the Princess Consort?
Not a chance.
Everyone in House Beaumont believed this theory to be the absolute truth.
Since Lucia was bound to be discarded by Prince Jareth, why should they treat her as the future Princess Consort?
"You insolent—!"
Bonnie was fuming. She stepped forward, ready to strike the man.
Lucia grabbed her arm. "I am in a hurry."
She didn't have time to deal with these fools right now. She would settle the score when she returned.
"My lady, they are bullying you!" Bonnie's eyes were red with fury.
"Let's just leave for now."
Lucia swept her gaze over the steward and his son. With a subtle flick of her finger, she drew a wisp of dark magic from the cursed root carving and sent it shooting straight into the young servant's chest.
"Have a safe trip, Lady Lucia."
The steward bowed his head, feigning perfect respect, but a sneer played on his lips.
See? What could she possibly do about it?
Watching Lucia walk out the gates, the young servant's eyes darted around. "I am going to inform Lady Aurelia. We need to make sure she doesn't try to borrow the carriage again."
"You little scoundrel, you're just looking for a reward, aren't you?" the steward scolded playfully.
