The moment Corin woke, blinding agony tore through him, drawing endless screams from his throat.
This time, the pain was even worse.
Silas Finch, a grown man, wept at the sight. "Father, did striking his head earlier make the pain worse?"
His son had never screamed quite this horrifically before.
Thankfully, they had wrapped him tightly in heavy blankets and bound him to the bed. Otherwise, Corin surely would have torn himself apart.
Writhing in agony, his mind had long since shattered into delirium.
Physician Finch looked ghastly pale.
"You knew you struck him too hard!"
Though he chided his son, the old man knew the blow wasn't the sole cause. By using brute force to knock the boy out, they had simply dammed up the dark affliction. Now that he was awake, the pent-up agony had erupted tenfold.
"We cannot render him unconscious again," the old physician muttered.
"Gods above, my Corin is a good boy. He has committed no evil. Why must he endure such torment?" Matron Finch cried, collapsing into a chair, unable to bear the sight.
Lady Finch sat by the bed, weeping so hard she could barely breathe. She wanted to comfort her son, but she was too terrified to even touch him.
The agonizing wails of the two women only twisted the knife deeper into the hearts of the physician and his son.
"It hurts... Grandfather, it hurts so much..."
In a brief, lucid moment, Corin turned his tear-stained face to his grandfather and sobbed.
Tears spilled freely down Physician Finch's weathered cheeks.
"Master, Lady Lucia has arrived!" a servant shouted, bursting into the room.
The old man jolted upright. "Quickly! Bring her in!"
Lucia stepped across the threshold, followed closely by Celia and Bonnie.
The entire Finch family turned to look at her.
The moment they saw her, their expressions shifted to universal horror. The same thought crossed every mind:
This frail, bandaged girl is supposed to save Corin? This has to be a joke!
