The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 2

She grabbed her right wrist with her left hand to steady the damn shaking and scribbled down the final stroke. The handwriting was crooked, but legible.

...

Three days later, in Dr. Roland's office.

"Mr. Joplin's condition isn't responding well to the standard domestic treatment protocols."

Dr. Roland paused.

"Aethelgard approved a new drug last year with excellent clinical data. I hear even their president uses it, but it requires serious connections to get your hands on it."

Dr. Roland looked at her with a hint of deference. "Mrs. Harper, surely Mr. Harper could source it?"

Beside her, Saul frowned.

Lavinia nodded, her voice very soft. "Yeah, I'll talk to him."

"That's wonderful. With him stepping in, there definitely won't be an issue."

Stepping out of the office, the door clicked shut behind them, though not completely.

"Dr. Roland, what did you just call her?" an assistant's voice leaked through the crack.

"You don't know her? That's the young Mrs. Harper, Garnett Harper's wife."

"She's that young? Then why is her uncle in the general ward?"

"Shh," Dr. Roland lowered his voice. "Don't go snooping into the affairs of wealthy families."

Saul stopped in his tracks and grabbed Lavinia's arm. "Lavinia, I don't want you lowering yourself to beg him."

"Saul." Lavinia forced a smile. "What begging? He's my husband. You go check on your dad first. I need to make a call."

Lavinia walked over to a public lounge area to call Garnett. Just as she took out her phone, she froze.

From the second-floor overlook, she had a clear view of the inpatient lobby below, where a sleek black Bentley had just pulled up. Several hospital administrators in suits were waiting anxiously by the entrance, one even rushing forward to open the car door.

A man and a woman stepped out. The man was extraordinarily handsome, possessing the chiseled features of a movie star. The woman's stunning face was pale with sickness, making her look even more delicate and pitiable.

Garnett carefully supported the frail Sigrid, walking briskly through the first-floor lobby and into the glass elevator.
