"Alright. I'll come pick you up."
***
When Lavinia and Charley arrived outside Garnett's office, his new chief secretary, Larkin Locke, asked them to wait for a moment, explaining that the Chairman was currently with a guest.
The door to the Chairman's office wasn't completely shut. As Lavinia and Charley sat in the waiting area, the sound of Garnett and Sigrid Sloan's conversation drifted through the crack.
Lavinia glanced at Charley. He leaned in close to her ear and whispered:
"Garnett pulled a lot of strings to get her out on bail, but her legal troubles are far from over."
At first, the voices inside were muffled, but as the argument escalated, every word became crystal clear.
Lavinia and Charley exchanged a look. The crack in the door felt entirely intentional.
"Garnett, didn't you already sign the divorce papers? Why is Lavinia still suing you?" Sigrid asked.
Garnett: "The ID I used on the day of the registry was technically invalid. It was a procedural flaw, so the divorce is void."
"Then why don't you just reapply?" Sigrid's tone grew desperate.
"...Sigrid, do you still not understand? I engineered that flaw on purpose. I don't want a divorce."
"You don't want a divorce? Why? Does Lavinia have some kind of blackmail on you?"
"No. There is no blackmail, no threat. I simply don't want to divorce her." Garnett's words were deliberate. "From the very beginning, I never wanted a divorce. I don't want one right now. And for the rest of my life, until the day I die, I never want to divorce Lavinia."
The screech of a chair leg scraping violently against the floor echoed from the office.
"Then what about me?! Garnett, I'm asking you, what about me?"
"Sigrid, I think I've repaid you as much as I possibly can." Garnett's voice was perfectly calm.
Sigrid's voice spiked into a shrill shriek. "Garnett, what is that supposed to mean?"
Garnett sighed. "I think my meaning is perfectly clear."
Garnett: "Here is a check for five million. It should more than cover your mother's medical bills and support you both in Marina Island for the foreseeable future. That is the absolute limit of what I can do."
"I don't understand!" Sigrid screamed hysterically. "You told me to wait for you! You said you'd give me an answer! You promised!"
Garnett's voice was ice-cold and merciless. "Yes, I said I would give you an answer. And this is it."
"Why!" Sigrid roared.
"Why? Are you even the same Sigrid Sloan from back then? You practically paraded around in a necklace that belonged to Lavinia, and then you secretly swapped out her bracelet. Lavinia wouldn't even be capable of dreaming up something so malicious. I've already done too much for you. I lost my grandmother's trust, and I lost Lavinia's heart. Do you honestly expect me to make an enemy of the entire world just to compensate you?"
"Garnett, don't you understand? I only did it because I love you so much..."
"Stop. Sigrid, honestly, you're a terrible actress. I didn't expose you before because I couldn't bring myself to do it. But since we've reached this point, let's both act like intelligent adults. I suggest you take the check and leave quietly. And please, try not to contact me again."
"How can you be so heartless? Have you forgotten..."
"The only thing I remember right now is that I am Lavinia's husband. I already have a wife."
