The fifth floor of the hospital was entirely dedicated to private wards. Each suite was a single room, and every patient had a dedicated medical team at their disposal.
Naturally, the cost was exorbitant. Even with money, securing a room here wasn't guaranteed.
Charley Sheffield had handled the room and the medical team, while Saul Joplin took care of the medical bills.
Down in the lobby, Charley picked up a bouquet of fresh flowers. Before walking through the door, he adjusted his suit jacket.
Saul rolled his eyes at him. "My parents have met you before. Stop strutting like a peacock."
Charley didn't even look at him. "You should spend more time reflecting on why others succeed instead of being bitter."
Saul choked on his words, unable to come up with a quick comeback. All he could do was glare.
Lavinia Joplin watched her cousin and his best friend bicker. Seeing them like this, who could possibly guess Charley's true identity and power?
When they pushed the door open, Mandy Summers was smoothing out her clothes. She asked Latham Joplin nervously, "Honey, do you think I'm dressed too casually today?"
"Not at all. You look wonderful. Don't worry," Latham reassured her.
As the door opened, Lavinia called out, "Uncle Latham, Aunt Mandy," and her eyes immediately welled up with tears.
She hadn't seen them in a month. Even though they spoke on the phone every day, seeing them in person turned a month's worth of longing into something physical. Her nose stung with emotion.
Latham was propped up against the headboard, looking significantly better than the last time she saw him. The new medication was clearly working well.
Mandy cupped Lavinia's face, murmuring about how she had lost weight. Then, her gaze shifted to Charley. Her eyes sparkled with joy, excitement, and a touch of shyness.
Charley walked up to the bed, set the flowers down, and greeted them respectfully. His manners and demeanor were absolutely flawless.
Mandy looked at him, her lips parting a few times. It was obvious she was still adjusting to the fact that her son's best friend was suddenly her prospective nephew-in-law. There were things she wanted to ask but felt too embarrassed to bring up.
Charley pulled out a velvet box and handed it to Mandy with both hands.
She then turned to him, smiling warmly. "Charley, I heard your family is all in the States, is that right?"
"Yes," he replied. "My parents have passed away, but I have an uncle in the US. My sister-in-law and nephew are in Brazil, and I have some extended family in Southeast Asia."
Mandy asked, "Do you plan on staying here long-term? Or will you move back to the States eventually?"
"As long as Lavinia is in Blossom City, I'll be in Blossom City," he said smoothly. "It makes it easier to look after you and Mr. Joplin."
Mandy breathed a sigh of relief. She was perfectly happy with his character and his career; her only fear was that he would eventually take Lavinia halfway across the world.
Lavinia had been more nervous than him during the interrogation. She was sitting off to the side, peeling an apple, the skin constantly breaking from her shaking hands.
Hearing him commit to settling down in Blossom City put her heart at ease, too.
Saul leaned against the window, his arms crossed as he watched the scene unfold. A faint smile graced his lips, a sense of profound relief washing over him.
