Uh... She had thought...
Snapping back to reality, Jocelyn's smile slowly faded.
She recounted everything that had happened at the nursing home to Julian, leaving out no detail.
After she finished, Jocelyn felt like something wasn't quite right.
Julian gently guided her.
"Think about it. As the director, she's talking about a patient who had been at her facility for over twenty years suddenly passing away, yet she didn't show a hint of sadness. Does that seem normal to you?"
"And the woman who had been caring for your mother chose to resign right after she passed away. Doesn't that seem awfully suspicious? Could it be that the director intentionally prevented you from seeing this caretaker to hide something?"
Jocelyn thought about it seriously.
"I don't know why, but I have this lingering feeling that my biological mother didn't die. She's still alive. But I clearly saw that death certificate with my own eyes."
Julian: "Death certificates can be forged, just like Marcus did years ago to protect her."
Jocelyn was stunned for a moment before a wave of excitement washed over her.
"Are you saying that death certificate could be fake? That my mother might still be alive?"
Julian: "It's entirely possible."
Jocelyn: "Then I can't go back to Northwood. I have to find out the truth."
Julian: "Alright. I'll stay here and help you."
To suddenly find hope in the midst of complete despair was like seeing a beam of light in absolute darkness. Jocelyn was completely swept up in the sudden rush of joy.
Without thinking, she grabbed Julian's hands.
"Julian, I've realized... you’re like a godsend whenever I'm at my lowest!"
A hint of absolute adoration flickered in Julian's eyes.
"The key person here isn't the director, it's the woman who cared for your mother. So, we need to quietly track her down and see if we can get any useful information from her."
Jocelyn nodded repeatedly.
"Yes, exactly. You're completely right."
Seeing her brow unfurrow and the tension leave her face, Julian pulled off a magic trick of his own, taking a thermos and a food container out of his bag.
"We were in such a rush after getting off the plane. I didn't have time to prepare much, just brought some tea and a few sandwiches. Do you want to grab a bite?"
Jocelyn's heart fluttered inexplicably. She smiled.
Reaching back, she pulled out her own insulated container.
Jocelyn: "Okay."
She was just reaching for the fork when Julian brought the meatball right to her lips.
Jocelyn's heart suddenly skipped a few beats. She opened her mouth and took it.
Julian held his other hand underneath, making sure it didn't drop.
As Jocelyn chewed, she couldn't help but steal a few extra glances at his handsome profile.
After letting her thoughts wander for a few seconds, she snapped back to reality.
She silently cursed herself.
*Jocelyn, do you still think you're a princess? Swooning over him like a love-struck teenager.*
From the very beginning, she had never been a fairytale princess, yet she had dared to dream of marrying a prince.
On the day she put on her wedding dress, she thought she was the luckiest girl in the world, marrying the perfect prince.
It was only after she said 'I do' that she realized she hadn't married a prince.
She'd married a bastard.
