Jocelyn didn't follow.
"What do you mean?"
Lana let out a heavy sigh.
"That phone call earlier... it was him. I told him you were here."
A sharp wave of disappointment washed over Jocelyn.
But after a moment's thought, she let it go.
From Lana's perspective, she was just doing what made sense for her.
Still, the feeling of being sold out left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Lana's eyes brimmed with quiet sadness.
"I heard about what happened with Claire. He loves his sister very much, and he wants to try and talk this out with you."
Jocelyn scoffed.
"Talk about what? He loves his sister, sure, but what about my mother? Did she just die for nothing?"
"Tell me, Lana. If it were you, would you just casually forgive the person who ran down your mother and then spun a web of lies to escape justice?"
Lana lowered her gaze, hiding whatever emotion flickered in her eyes.
But when she spoke, her voice trembled slightly.
"If it were my mother, I would personally thank the person who ran her over."
Jocelyn blinked in surprise.
Clearly, her past was just as traumatic.
But Jocelyn had no desire to pry.
They were never going to be friends.
She glanced down at Lana's hand, noticing a broken fingernail.
"Your finger is bleeding. That looks like it hurts. You should probably wrap it."
Lana flinched, biting her lower lip as her eyes suddenly burned with tears.
So this was what it felt like to have someone care about you.
And she had just completely betrayed her.
Panic suddenly gripped Lana.
"You need to leave. Hurry, before he gets here."
"Let me guess. He told you to stall me until he arrived, didn't he?"
Guilt flushed across Lana's face.
