Jocelyn's dark eyes gleamed. "When you say 'they,' does that include Adrian?"
"Oh, no, not him," the nanny said. "He had just stepped out to take a call at that moment, so he doesn't know."
Jocelyn didn't know whether to feel sorry for Adrian or not. All this time, the women of the Lowell family had been hiding the truth from him, conspiring to help the mistress get her revenge.
Audrey had two goals with this stunt.
First, she was resentful and wanted to stop Adrian from transferring the property to Jocelyn.
Second, she wanted to test whether Adrian cared about her and the child, and if he would rush back for them.
In the end, she had failed on both counts.
No wonder Audrey had looked at her differently today. There was something new in her eyes: hatred.
If that was the case, Jocelyn didn't mind giving the mistress a little more to hate.
"Is the diagnostic report still around?" Jocelyn asked.
The nanny, who had taken a liking to Jocelyn, answered honestly. "They threw it away a long time ago. I guess they didn't want Adrian to see it."
The nanny felt a pang of guilt. "Jocelyn, I actually wanted to speak up for you today, but you know, I..."
Jocelyn understood, of course. When you're living under someone else's roof, you don't have much of a voice.
"It's okay. I'm grateful enough that you told me all this. Don't worry, our conversation just now won't cause you any trouble."
The nanny left, relieved.
Jocelyn returned to her room and slept soundly.
The next morning, she called Sarah.
Jocelyn explained the whole situation.
Sarah was seething. "You need to get out of that hellhole. The sooner, the better. Every extra day you stay is another day of torture."
Jocelyn laughed it off. "They torture me, I annoy them. The feeling's mutual."
Sarah replied, "I swear, your mindset is one of a kind. Don't worry, leave it to me. I'll get it done for you today."
After the call, Jocelyn instinctively started to leave her room. Then she remembered she was supposedly confined and wasn't even allowed to have breakfast.
Perhaps that's just how people are. When you're licking your wounds in private, you feel like you can handle anything. But the moment someone shows you a little kindness, you want to break down and cry.
A sharp chime from her phone broke the silence in the room.
It was a message from Liam Bancroft.
[My birthday tomorrow. 7 PM at Aurelia. Be there.]
Jocelyn's fingers hovered over the screen for a long moment before she finally typed a single word.
[OK.]
Setting aside the proposal incident, Liam had been good to her. Since he had invited her personally, she felt she should go.
Another message came through.
Liam: [I'm going to set you up with a total hunk.]
Jocelyn smiled but didn't reply.
The man didn't have a serious bone in his body.
