But Maria was thinking about the three hundred thousand dollars.
"Mrs. Lowell, from now on, I will serve you. You don't have to pay me a salary. Just give me food to eat."
Jocelyn gave an embarrassed smile.
"A full stomach is definitely not a problem, but I probably can't afford a salary for now. I just took on a three-hundred-thousand-dollar debt myself."
Maria was moved once again.
Jocelyn brought Maria to The Astoria and personally washed her hair and helped her bathe.
It was the first time Maria had been cared for like this, and by her own mistress, no less. She was so moved she wanted to kneel again.
But remembering what Julian had said, she stopped herself.
She silently vowed to take care of Jocelyn as if she were her own daughter.
After all that, Jocelyn felt a little tired.
"Maria, get some rest. Don't think about anything. From now on, this is your home."
Maria took Jocelyn's hand, her heart aching for her.
"Mrs. Lowell..."
"Maria," Jocelyn said, "don't call me Mrs. Lowell anymore. Call me Jocelyn."
"No," Maria refused firmly. "I can stop calling you Mrs. Lowell, but you are my benefactor, and you are my mistress. From now on, I will call you Miss Jocelyn."
"Miss Jocelyn, as long as I'm able, I will take care of you."
Jocelyn had no choice but to agree.
Maria suddenly remembered something.
"Miss Jocelyn, there's something... I was afraid to tell you because I didn't want you to get upset and affect the baby."
Jocelyn smiled calmly. "After surviving all these years with the Lowells, there's probably nothing I can't handle."
"I happened to overhear a conversation between Grandma and Mrs. Lowell. Grandma was saying that the Preston family's power is growing, and that Audrey is a much better match for the Lowell family. Since Arthur is gone, and Audrey is now carrying Adrian's child, it would be better to just let the two of them be together."
Jocelyn's heart remained calm, though her smile was laced with irony.
"I know."
Even if Eleanor hadn't said it, Jocelyn knew what they were planning.
"I was just joking. I just don't want you to have a financial burden. Even if you find a better opportunity later, it's fine."
"For now, your Vanguard Tech is probably the best choice."
Jocelyn smiled. "Because Vanguard has a great boss. I think working for a boss like that, I won't be at a disadvantage."
Julian remembered something.
"I'll have Ethan bring over the daily necessities Maria needs tomorrow. You don't have to go buy them."
Jocelyn didn't stand on ceremony.
"Okay."
Julian noticed her rubbing her back. "Is your back sore?"
Jocelyn gave a wry smile. "It's been like this a lot since I got pregnant."
Julian's expression froze slightly.
He wanted to say something, but in the end, he didn't.
The momentary silence was broken by Adrian's call.
