Chapter 185-1
The party has reached an absolute fever pitch.

The heavy bass from the speakers fills the penthouse with infectious energy, and the main living room has been cleared of coffee tables to make room for a makeshift dance floor.
Rook and his girlfriend are spinning around near the hearth, while Dad is currently engaged in a hilarious, highly competitive dance-off with Mayhem in the middle of the room, both of them holding half-empty glasses of bourbon and surrounded by a roaring circle of cheering club brothers.
Jade is standing near the sofa, holding a real glass of champagne in one hand and keeping a hawk-like eye on my fake flute in the other.
True to her word, she’s spent the last two hours executing her cover operation with surgical precision.
Every time Mayhem or Dad or anyone tried to hand me a shot, Jade materialized out of nowhere, loudly claiming that “Zara is stickin’ to the high-end wine tonight, boys!” and whisking me away under the guise of needing help with restocking the food platters.
As the music shifts to a classic rock anthem, Dad detaches himself from Mayhem and struts over to where I’m standing near the kitchen island. He’s grinning wide, his dark eyes warm and slurred with just a hint of good bourbon.
Without warning, he steps up and wraps his broad arms around me, pulling me into a big, bear-hug squeeze that smells of leather, cigars, and sweet amber liquor.
“Look at my girl,” he says, looking down at me with real, emotional pride in his eyes. “Just look at you, Zara. Fucking golden.”
“I’m feeling good, Dad,” I say, leaning into his solid side.
“You’re looking better than good,” he says, his voice taking on a heavy, sincere edge that cuts right through his drunken cheer. “I was thinking about it earlier tonight… looking at you dancing around, laughing, hosting all these idiots.”
He shakes his head, reaching up to gently pat my cheek with a calloused hand.
“You beat that cancer’s ass, kid. You tore right through it,” Cobra says proudly, lifting his glass of bourbon in a solo toast to me. “I’m telling you right now, this coming year, your health’s gonna be 100%. perfect. Not a single sick day, not a single doctor’s office, no hospital beds, no nothing. Just pure, clean, perfect health for my girl all year long!”
I bite my lip so hard it practically bleeds, trying frantically to suppress the sudden, ticklish snort of laughter bubbling up in my throat.
No doctor’s offices.
I glance past Dad’s shoulder to where Locke is standing against the wall. Locke has caught every word of his impassioned speech, and his eyes meet mine across the room.
A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch tugs at the corner of Locke’s mouth, his heavy chest expanding as he holds back his own dark chuckle of amusement.

“Thank you, Dad,” I squeak. I quickly take a sip of my zero-alcohol champagne to cover my face. “I… I really appreciate that. Here’s to perfect health.”
“Damn right!” he beams, totally oblivious to the real reason for my giggles as he slaps the counter and marches back toward the bar to demand another refill from Mayhem.
I lean against the marble, resting my hand over my mouth as quiet, helpless laughter shakes my shoulders. Locke saunters over a second later, his towering presence immediately blocking me from the rest of the crowd. He leans down, his broad shoulder pressing warm against mine.
‘Perfect health, huh? No doctor visits?”
‘Not a single one,” I giggle softly, looking up at him as I rest my head against his arm. “Dr. Innis is going to be so surprised when I skip our twelve-week appointment because Dad guaranteed my medical immunity.”
Locke lets out a low, rough rumble of laughter in the back of his throat, his large hand coming up to gently cup the nape of my neck. “Old man means well. But he’s in for a hell of a surprise in two weeks.”
‘He really is.”
‘One minute to midnight!” someone shouts from near the TV monitor, which is currently broadcasting the ive countdown from the crowded city square.
