The air inside Byte’s command room is cold, tight, and humming with the low static of half a

dozen open radio channels.

I sit in a low swivel chair near the center console, my fingers intertwined tightly over the rise

of my stomach beneath Locke’s wool sweater.

Willow sits to my left, her posture quiet and upright, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

To my right, Jade leans forward with her elbows on her knees, her sharp green eyes fixed on

a live GPS grid.

“All teams are in position,” Byte says. His voice is flat, clinical, and entirely devoid of panic;

“Decoy units one through four are in place. Local police radio bands are lighting up with

reports thanks to Cobra’s Irregulars carrying out some pretty remarkable sabotage. It’s

buying us time.”

“Wait,” I say. “Pip and Flea and all the others are… what? Smashing windows? Setting off car

alarms? Flooding 911 with calls?”

“Among other things,” Byte says. “Don’t even ask what Roxy and her girls are up to.”

“Raising hell?” Jade asks. “Maybe without many clothes on?”

Byte winks, then turns serious again.

He taps a key, zooming the live grid in on the industrial dry–cleaning plant. “Ground tracking

shows Mayhem and Rook’s element sitting two hundred yards off the southern perimeter

line.”

Jade squints at the monitor, sees the moving dots labelled with code numbers that identify

each man. “But – wait. Why are Cobra, Hammer, and Big Mac not with the ground breach

team?”

I freeze, leaning closer to the console, trying to make sense of the numbers and squiggles.

“What do you mean they aren’t with them? Where are they?”

Jade looks at the secondary coordinates, reading them as easily as she would a children’s

book. “Your Dad took Hammer and Big Mac, and they’re way the hell separated from the rest

of the guys. But why?”
