Interogation

The dungeon beneath the royal estate had been built to contain creatures that ordinary cells could

never hold.

Its walls were reinforced with ancient iron, the doors sealed with old magic, and the air itself

seemed heavier than anywhere else in the palace, carrying the metallic scent of blood/stone, and something far older than either.

Tonight, however, it was not the prisoners who made the dungeon frightening.

It was the man standing before them.

Caleb Adama had gone feral.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But close enough that even the guards stationed outside the chamber refused to meet his eyes.

His dark hair had fallen messily across his forehead, his chest rising and falling with controlled breaths that were becoming increasingly difficult to control, while his eyes had transformed into something almost unnatural, the darkness swallowing whatever remained of the calm Crown Prince who usually calculated every word before he spoke it.

In front of him sat two men.

Nick.

And Rhys.

Iva’s former mate.

Iva’s father.

Both were bruised, exhausted, and restrained, yet somehow neither looked frightened.

That was what was driving Caleb insane.

“Where is she?”

His voice was low.

Too low.

Nick lifted his head slowly.

A crooked smile appeared on his face.

Intogation

“You still don’t understand, do you?”

Galeb’s jaw tightened.

“Understand what?”

“That you are too late.”

Something inside Caleb snapped.

He crossed the distance between them in a heartbeat, grabbing Nick by the front of his clothes

and forcing him backward against the stone wall.

The restraints rattled violently.

“Where.”

One word.

One terrifying command.

Nick stared directly into his eyes.

And laughed.

Not nervously.

Not desperately.

He actually laughed.

“You really think I am going to tell you?”

Caleb’s fingers tightened.

Rhys suddenly chuckled from the other side of the room.

“Look at you.”

Caleb turned his head.

Rhys was watching him with an almost disturbing satisfaction.

“The mighty Crown Prince,” he murmured. “Reduced to this because of one little she-wolf.”

For several seconds Caleb simply stood there, breathing heavily, his fists clenched at his sides.

He had interrogated rogues.

He had fought assassins.

Interogation

He had faced entire groups of enemies without allowing his emotions to interfere with his

judgment.

But this was different.

Because somewhere out there was Iva.

And he didn’t know where she was.

He didn’t know whether she was frightened.

Whether she was hurt.

Whether she was alone.

Chaos was barely contained inside him.

“Mate. Find her.”

“I know.”

“Find her.”

“I know!”

His roar echoed through the dungeon.

Nick flinched despite himself.

Rhys stopped smiling.

Caleb stepped toward them again.

“One last time.”

His voice had become frighteningly calm.

“Where is Iva?”

Nick looked at Rhys.

Rhys looked at Nick.

Then both men laughed, despite the poor condition they were in.

Caleb’s vision blurred red.

His aura exploded outward.

The lamps flickered.

Interogation

The stone beneath his boots groaned.

Every instinct inside him screamed to eliminate the obstacles in front of him and search every

corner of the world afterward.

He lunged.

“CALeb!”

The command thundered through the chamber.

Caleb stopped.

A hand had closed around his shoulder.

Power collided with power.

King William Adama stood behind him.

The Lycan King had entered so quietly that Caleb hadn’t even sensed him.

“Let go,” Caleb snarled.

“No.”

“Father.”

William’s expression hardened.

“Enough.”

Caleb turned slowly.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You don’t know where she is.”

“I know.”

“Then move.”

William didn’t.

Instead, he stepped directly between Caleb and the prisoners as he mind-linked him.

“If you kill them, we lose the only two people in this room who may know where she has been taken.”

Caleb’s breathing became ragged.

“They are lying.”

“Perhaps.”

“They are enjoying this,”

“I know.”

“They think they can hide her from me.”

William’s gaze hardened.

“Then prove them wrong.”

Caleb stared at him.

William lowered his voice.

“But not like this.”

For a moment, father and son simply looked at each other.

Then William continued.

“You are angry. You are frightened. You are bonded to her, and every instinct in you is screaming to tear this entire kingdom apart until you find her.”

Caleb’s jaw trembled.

“But if you allow Chaos to take control completely,” William continued, “you will kill them.”

Caleb looked toward Nick.

The man was no longer laughing.

“And once they are dead?”

William’s voice became quieter.

“You will have nothing.”

That struck deeper than any command could have.

Caleb slowly released the tension in his hands.

Barely.

William watched him carefully.

“You want Iva back?”

“More than anything.”

Then think.”

Caleb closed his eyes,

For several seconds, he simply stood there while the storm inside him fought against the part of

him that still knew how to reason.

Then his eyes opened again.

The feral darkness was still there.

But now something else had joined it.

Calculation.

Cold.

Precise.

Dangerous.

He looked at Nick.

“You were laughing because you thought my anger would make me careless.”

Nick swallowed.

Caleb smiled without warmth.

“You were wrong.”

Rhys’s expression changed.

Caleb stepped closer, but this time he did not touch either man.

“I don’t need you to tell me everything.”

His gaze moved between them.

“I only need one mistake.”

Silence.

“One name.”

Another pause.

“One location.”

Caleb turned toward the door.

“And when I find her, you will discover exactly how patient I can be when the woman I love is safe.”

He stopped.

Neither man spoke.

Then Caleb looked over his shoulder.

“But if she is hurt…”

The words died in the air.

He didn’t need to finish them.

William did.

“Caleb.”

The Crown Prince looked at his father.

“Find her first.”

Caleb nodded once.

Then he walked out of the dungeon, leaving Nick and Rhys staring after him.

The heavy door slammed shut.

And for the first time that night, Nick’s smile disappeared completely.

Because he finally understood something neither he nor Rhys had considered.

They had been trying to provoke a furious Crown Prince, as the news of his lack of control spread everywhere, including in the Northern Packs were they were hiding.

They had just created something much more dangerous.

A Crown Prince who had regained control.

And Caleb Adama was infinitely more terrifying when he was thinking clearly.
