The Remembering

The world was silent.

Iva lay in Caleb’s arms, her body still trembling from the aftershocks of their passion, her skin slick with sweat, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The heat that had consumed her was finally satisfied-at least for now-but in its place was something far more overwhelming.

For the first time since waking without her memories, Eva understood what it meant to finally feel whole.

She lay trembling in Caleb’s arms, her cheek pressed against his warm chest while his heartbeat thundered beneath her ear, steady and familiar in a way that reached somewhere deeper than memory, deeper than the bond, deeper than anything she had been able to understand until this moment.

She knew him.

Not because someone had told her his name.

Not because Lori had explained that he was the Crown Prince.

Not because Melissandre had told her they were mates.

She knew him because every forgotten piece of her life had suddenly returned.

The memories had not come gently.

They had crashed into her mind with such force that she had cried out, gripping Caleb as images, conversations, laughter, arguments, kisses, promises, fear, separation and love rushed through her all at once.

She remembered their first meeting.

She remembered the way Caleb had looked at her.

She remembered the first time she had realized that the powerful Lycan Prince was not frightening when they were alone, but gentle, protective and impossibly patient with her.

She remembered their bond.

Their life.

“Iva?” Caleb’s voice was soft, tentative, as if he was afraid that speaking too loudly would shatter the fragile moment between them. “Are you okay?”

She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out.

Instead, a sob tore from her throat.

It was a raw, broken sound, full of grief and relief and joy and sorrow all tangled together. The tears came next-hot and fast, streaming down her cheeks, soaking into the pillow beneath her head.

Caleb’s arms tightened around her.

“Iva, what’s wrong? Did I hurt you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-”

“No,” she choked out. “No, you didn’t hurt me. You didn’t-” She broke off, another sob wracking her body. “I remember, Caleb. I remember everything.”

He went still, as initially he believed that he misheard her.

“Everything?”

“Everything.” She lifted her head to look at him, her eyes red-rimmed and overflowing. “The Academy. The first time we met. The first time you told me you loved me. The ball. The Council. The day they took me.”

Her voice cracked on the last words, and she buried her face in his chest.

“I remember the fear,” she whispered. “The pain. The months of not knowing who I was or where I belonged. But now I remember you. I remember the way you looked at me like I was the only person in the world. I remember the way you held me when I was scared. I remember the way you loved me.”

Caleb’s arms tightened around her, his body shaking.

“I thought I’d lost you,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “For so long, I thought I’d lost you forever. I searched for you, Iva. Every day. Every night. I never stopped. I couldn’t stop.”

“I know,” she whispered. “I know.”

She could feel his tears now-warm drops falling onto her hair, her forehead, her cheeks. He was crying. Her strong, powerful, unshakeable mate was crying.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m so sorry for what you went through. For what I put you through.”

He pulled back, his hands cupping her face, his amber eyes glistening.

“Don’t you dare apologize,” he said fiercely. “None of this was your fault. None of it. I would go through it all again-every moment of pain, every sleepless night, every ounce of fear-if it meant finding you again.”

She laughed through her tears-a wet, broken sound.

“I love you,” she said. “I love you so much. I didn’t remember, but I felt it. Every day, even when I couldn’t understand why, I felt it. The bond. The connection. You.”

Galeb pressed his forehead to hers.

“I love you too,” he whispered. “More than you will ever know. More than I can ever say.”

They lay there, tangled together, crying in each other’s arms. The tears were cathartic-a release of all the pain and fear and grief that had built up over the months of their separation.

And when the tears finally slowed, when the sobs faded to shaky breaths, something else stirred between them.

The heat.

It had been satisfied-temporarily-but the bond was still humming, the need still pulsing beneath the surface. Iva felt it rise again, a familiar ache building in her core.

“The heat,” she whispered. “It’s not over.”

Caleb’s eyes darkened.

“I know,” he said. “I can feel it too.”

She reached up and touched his face, her fingers tracing the line of his jaw.

“Then don’t stop,” she said. “I don’t want you to stop. I want you to make it go away. I want you to make me forget everything this time, except you.”

He kissed her-soft, tender, a promise of what was to come.

“Then I will,” he said. “I’ll make it go away. I’ll make you forget. I’ll make you remember only this.” And then he was moving inside her again, and the world dissolved into sensation.

The night stretched on, endless and beautiful.

They made love in every way imaginable-slow and tender, fast and desperate, gentle and rough. Each time the heat rose, Caleb was there to meet it, his body a balm to the fire that consumed her.

They moved from the bed to the floor, then to the shower, then back to the bed again. Their bodies intertwined, their hearts beating in perfect unison, their souls bound together by a bond that nothing could break.

At some point, the tears returned-but these were tears of joy, of relief, of overwhelming love.

“I missed you,” she whispered as he held her against his chest.

“I missed you too,” he murmured against her hair.

thought I would never see you again.”

“I never stopped looking.”

They made love again, and then again, until the first light of dawn began to creep through the curtains.

The heat finally subsided-sated, exhausted, satisfied.

Iva lay in Caleb’s arms, her body aching in the most delicious way, her heart so full it felt like it

might burst. She was exhausted, but it was a good exhaustion-the kind that came from hours of pleasure and emotion.

Caleb’s hand traced lazy patterns on her back.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She smiled against his chest.

“I’m more than okay,” she said. “I’m home.”

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

“You’re home,” he echoed. “And I’m never letting you go again.”

She snuggled closer, her eyes fluttering closed.

“I love you, Caleb,” she whispered.

“I love you too, Iva. Forever.”

And as she drifted off to sleep in the arms of her mate, she knew-with a certainty that settled

deep in her bones-that nothing would ever tear them apart again.

They had been separated by fate, by cruelty, by forces beyond their control.

But they had found their way back to each other.

And that was all that mattered.

The Puppet Master

Caleb lay on his back, his arm wrapped around Iva, her head resting on his chest, her breath warm against his skin. Their fingers were intertwined, hands clasped together as if they were afraid to let go even in sleep.

He had not slept.

He couldn’t.

Every time he closed his eyes, he was afraid that she would disappear-that he would wake up and find himself alone again, the bed cold and empty beside him. So he had stayed awake, watching her sleep, memorizing the curve of her lips, the flutter of her lashes, the gentle rise and fall of her chest.

She was here.

She was real.

She was his.

The joy that filled him was almost unbearable-a wild, desperate happiness that made his chest ache and his eyes sting with unshed tears.

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, breathing in her scent.

*Mine,* Chaos murmured, content for the first time in months. *Ours. Finally.*

*Yes,* Caleb agreed. *Finally.*

He was so lost in his happiness that he almost missed it.

Iva woke slowly.

For several seconds she remained perfectly still, her eyes closed, her breathing calm, because the warmth surrounding her felt so familiar that she did not want to disturb it.

Her fingers were intertwined with Caleb’s.

Iva smiled.

She turned her head slightly.

Caleb was still asleep beside her.

His dark hair was dishevelled, his usually controlled expression softened by exhaustion, and there was something almost peaceful about seeing the powerful Lycan Prince lying there without the weight of the kingdom on his shoulders.

Iva watched him quietly.

Then she whispered his name.

“Caleb.”

His eyes opened immediately.

For one beautiful second, he looked confused.

Then he saw her.

Everything changed.

A smile spread slowly across his face, and the happiness in his eyes was so pure that Iva felt her chest tighten.

“You’re here,” he whispered.

She smiled.

“I’m here.”

Caleb lifted their joined hands and kissed her fingers.

He still couldn’t seem to believe it.

After everything that had happened, after all the nights he had spent wondering whether his mate

would ever remember him, he had awakened with Iva beside him and her hand resting inside his.

“I keep thinking I’m going to wake up,” he admitted quietly.

Iva touched his cheek.

“Maybe you are.”

He frowned playfully.

“Don’t say that.”

She laughed softly.

“I remember everything.”

His expression became emotional again.

“I know.”

He kissed her forehead.

“And I still can’t believe it.”

Ava moved closer and rested her head against his shoulder.

“I remember how much you worried.”

“I would have worried for the rest of my life if necessary.”

She looked at him.

“You really love me that much?”

Caleb stared at her as though the question itself was impossible.

“There isn’t a part of me that doesn’t.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

She squeezed his hand.

“I love you too.”

Caleb smiled.

For several precious minutes, nothing existed beyond that room.

No kingdom.

No hunters.

No witches.

No genie.

No darkness.

Only them.

Then Iva’s body suddenly went rigid.

Caleb felt it immediately.

“What is it?”

She didn’t answer.

Her breathing stopped.

Her fingers tightened painfully around his.

“Iva?”

She slowly lifted her head.

Galeb’s smile disappeared.

Her eyes had changed.

The warm colour he knew so well was gone.

In its place was an unnatural, luminous violet.

Caleb’s entire body went cold.

“No.”

The thing that wore Iva’s face smiled-a slow, predatory curve of lips that did not belong to her. The violet eyes gleamed with malice, with amusement, with a cold, ancient cruelty.

“Did you really believe it would be so easy to push me away?” the voice said-Iva’s voice, but not. It was layered, echoing, as if two people were speaking at once.

Caleb’s heart stopped.

“Give her back,” he snarled, his hands tightening on her shoulders. “Give me my mate back.”

The Genie laughed. The sound was beautiful and terrible, like poisoned honey.

“Your mate?” it repeated, tilting Iva’s head in a gesture that was utterly foreign.

“Did you really believe it would be so easy to push me away?”

Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs.

“Give her back.”

The genie laughed softly through Iva’s lips.

“You are remarkably persistent.”

“Give me my mate.”

“You had her.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“What did you do?”

“I gave you a taste.”

Her violet eyes gleamed.

Caleb stared at her.

“What?”

“Lallowed the barriers to weaken.”

The genie smiled.

“I allowed her memories to return.”

Caleb suddenly understood.

The happiness from the previous night.

Iva remembering him.

Iva loving him.

Every word.

Every touch.

Every precious second.

His stomach twisted.

“You planned this.”

“Of course.”

The genie laughed again.

25 Pmust

“You thought your mate had somehow defeated me, didn’t you? Or that loves conquers all….?”

Caleb rose from the bed, but he remained carefully positioned between the entity and the rest of the room as though he could somehow protect Iva from within her own body.

“What do you want?”

“I want what I have always wanted. The Velinthra. I told you to find it. I gave you instructions. And what did you do?” The violet eyes narrowed. “You ignored me. And so I had to take matters into my own hands.”

Caleb’s blood ran cold.

“What did you do?”

“I took her memories,” the Genie said simply. “I erased them. I made her forget you, forget everything. She became a blank slate-a puppet for me to control. And you.” It laughed again. “You played right into my hands. You found her, you brought her back, you almost made her fall for you again. And now-” The violet eyes gleamed. “Now you will do what I say, or I will erase her

completely. She will become nothing. A shell. A husk. And you will lose her forever.”

Caleb’s heart shattered.

“No,” he whispered. “Please. Don’t-”

“Find the Velintra,” the Genie interrupted, its voice cold and commanding. “Bring it to me. You have one week. Or she will be gone forever.”

The violet eyes closed.

When they opened again, they were brown-warm, confused, *Iva*.

Caleb stared at her, his chest heaving, his mind reeling.

“Iva?” he said, his voice trembling. “Iva, can you hear me?”

She blinked, her brow furrowing.

She looked down at herself-at her naked body, at the sheets tangled around her, at the strange man in bed beside her. Her eyes went wide with shock and fear.

“What-what is happening?” she stammered, scrambling away from him, wrapping the sheet around her body. “Who are you? Where am I?”

Caleb’s heart cracked open.

She didn’t remember.

She didn’t remember him… again!

The Genie had kept its promise.

“Iva,” he said, his voice breaking. “Iva, please. You know me. You remember me. I’m your mate. I’m

“I don’t know you!” she cried, pressing herself against the headboard. “I don’t know who you are! Stay away from me!”

Caleb reached for her, his eyes filling with tears.

“Iva, please-”

“No!” she screamed. “Get away from me!”
