The Path

Zamfir stood at the center of the enormous hall, his violet eyes fixed upon Caleb with an

expression that was impossible to read.

The female genie remained several steps behind him.

Caleb could barely look away from her.

There was something about her presence that disturbed him on a level deeper than fear, because

even though her face was beautiful and her posture almost delicate, every instinct inside him screamed that she was the same being who had invaded Iva’s mind, erased her memories, and

turned his mate into a stranger.

She had been inside Iva.

She had spoken through Iva.

She had controlled her body.

And yet she was standing here now.

Outside of her.

Free.

Caleb’s hands tightened into fists.

“Why?”

The female genie smiled.

Zamfir answered instead.

“Because I know what you seek.”

Caleb slowly turned toward him.

“You know.”

“I know that you seek the Velinthra.”

The name echoed through the hall.

Caleb’s eyes narrowed.

“But Caleb,” Zamfir continued, “you are not the only one seeking it.”

Caleb looked toward the woman.

“If you’re already here, why do you need me?”

She laughed softly.

It was a beautiful sound, but there was nothing warm about it.

“Because, my dear Lycan, the Velinthra cannot simply be taken.”

“Then why send me?”

Zamfir stepped closer.

“Because the stone has a mind of its own.”

Caleb stared at him.

“What?”

“The Velinthra is not an ordinary object.”

Zamfir’s voice became more serious.

“It possesses its own consciousness. Its own will. Its own judgment.”

Caleb shook his head.

“You expect me to believe that a stone decides who can use it?”

“Yes.”

“And how exactly does it decide?”

“It tests the person who seeks it.”

The female genie smiled.

“And it knows when someone desires it for selfish reasons.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“So it rejects anyone who wants its power.”

“Precisely.”

“And you can’t get it.”

Zamfir’s smile disappeared.

“We cannot.”

Caleb’s eyes widened.

For the first time, he understood why they had brought him here.

“You’re using me.”

Zamfir didn’t deny it.

“Of course.”

Rage exploded through Caleb.

“You brought me into this place knowing I could die.”

“Yes.”

“You allowed me to walk through that desert.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the lake would attack me.”

“Yes.”

Caleb stepped forward.

“And you knew that creature was waiting for me.”

Zamfir’s eyes glimmered.

“Every step.”

Caleb’s supernatural energy surged through the hall.

The gargoyles surrounding them seemed to tremble.

“You are all insane.”

Zamfir laughed.

“Why me?”

The genie smiled.

“Because your bloodline is strong enough.”

Caleb stared.

“Strong enough for what?”

“To survive the trials.”

“What trials?”

“The Velinthra chooses them.”

Galeb’s breathing became heavier.

“And you expect me to walk into these trials because you say I can survive them?”

Zamfir shrugged.

“It isn’t that difficult.”

Caleb almost laughed.

“Not that difficult?”

He gestured toward the gargoyles.

“You’ve turned people to stone.”

“They failed.”

“I was nearly killed in your desert.”

“You survived.”

“I was dragged underwater.”

“You survived.”

Caleb’s eyes flashed.

“And you call that easy?”

Zamfir smiled.

“For someone like you?”

“Yes.”

Caleb shook his head.

“You are all completely insane.”

Then Zamfir said something that stopped him cold.

“You would prefer Asha’s deal?”

Caleb froze.

The hall suddenly seemed much colder.

“How do you know about that?”

Not loudly.

Almost gently.

“So you would prefer the succubus’s help over mine?”

Caleb’s face changed.

Succubus.

The word echoed inside his mind.

Asha.

Her eyes.

Her smile.

The strange attraction he had sensed from her.

The way she had touched his hand.

The way she had entered his bedroom.

Her proposal.

Her insistence that she needed his child.

Everything suddenly connected.

She had never been human.

She had lied.

She had manipulated him.

And the strange attraction he had felt from her had not been ordinary attraction.

It had been supernatural.

Caleb’s stomach turned.

“Asha…”

Zamfir smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Caleb looked away.

Chaos stirred.

“She is a demon. And she wanted our blood.”

Chaos remained silent for several seconds.

Then Caleb asked him the question that had been burning inside his mind.

“What do you believe we should do?”

Chaos did not answer immediately.

Finally, his voice came quietly.

“I don’t know.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

Then Chaos continued.

“But I know this.”

“What?”

“We have already lost too much time.”

Caleb opened his eyes.

Chaos’s voice became darker.

“We have two days left.”

Caleb’s heart sank.

Two days.

That was all.

The deadline the genie had given him.

Two days before Iva’s condition became permanent.

Two days before Avalon could potentially be lost forever.

Two days before the genie might decide there was no reason to keep negotiating.

Caleb looked at the female genie.

She smiled as though she could hear every thought.

“You understand now.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t trust you.”

“You don’t need to.”

“I don’t trust Zamfir.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“And I certainly don’t trust Asha.”

The female genie laughed.

“Good.”

Caleb looked at Zamfir.

He was exhausted.

Angry.

Confused.

And desperate.

Every path before him appeared dangerous.

Asha wanted something from his blood.
