The Viollet Hall

The Viollet Hall
Caleb had no time to react.
One moment he was standing inside the tavern, surrounded by hushed conversations, frightened
glances, and the strange silence that had fallen over every violet-eyed creature after the knocking
beneath the streets of Talis, and in the next moment he felt it-a wave of energy crossing through his body with such force that every muscle tightened painfully, as though invisible hands had
seized his soul rather than his flesh.
The room blurred.
The walls twisted.
The floor beneath his feet vanished.
For one terrifying instant, Caleb felt himself suspended between places, between realities, as if his body no longer belonged to any world at all.
Chaos roared inside him.
“Fight it!”
Caleb tried.
He summoned every ounce of strength that had allowed him to survive wars, rogues, betrayals, and impossible battles, but this force was unlike anything he had ever encountered.
It was not strength.
It was authority.
A command.
And his body obeyed.
Light exploded around him.
Darkness followed.
Then-
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Caleb opened his eyes.
His heart pounded heavily in his chest.

The Viollet Hall
The tavern was gone.
The city was gone.
He stood alone in an enormous hall.

For several moments, he simply looked around, trying to understand where he had been brought.
At first glance, it resembled a palace.
Massive marble pillars rose toward a ceiling so high that it disappeared into shadows, while
strange floating lights illuminated the vast chamber in shades of silver and violet. The floor
beneath his feet was polished black stone that reflected everything like still water.
Yet there was something deeply unsettling about the place.
Something wrong.
Caleb slowly turned.
His eyes narrowed.
Statues.
Hundreds of them.
No.
Not statues.
Gargoyles.
Creatures carved from dark stone stood everywhere throughout the hall, positioned between pillars, lining the walls, perched high above the arches.
Some possessed enormous wings.
Others had horns twisting from their heads.
Some had claws.
Some had faces that were almost human, except for the strange expressions frozen upon them-
terror, rage, despair.
Chaos became uneasy.
“I don’t like this place.”
Caleb agreed.

There was an oppressive energy filling the hall.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Watching.
Then a voice echoed through the chamber.
Deep.
Strong.
Resonating from every direction at once.
“Welcome, Caleb Adama.”
Caleb immediately turned.
At the far end of the hall stood a figure.
Tall.
Motionless.
Wrapped in flowing dark robes that seemed to shift like smoke.
The face was handsome, almost unnaturally so, with sharp features and skin carrying a faint bronze glow, but what caught Caleb’s attention immediately were the eyes.
Violet.
Not the violet he had seen in Talis.
Brighter.
Older.
The eyes seemed to contain stars.
Caleb understood immediately.
Genie.
A real one.
Not a servant.
Not a citizen.

One of the beings who ruled this realm.
Galeb remained standing.
“Who are you?”
The figure laughed softly.
It was not an amused laugh.
It was arrogant.
Ancient.
The laugh of someone who had lived too long and forgotten what equality meant.
“How rude.”
The genie descended the steps slowly.

“You enter my realm, disturb old powers, awaken sleeping guardians, and yet you do not even pause to greet your host.”
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“I didn’t realize I was invited.”
Another smile.
“Oh, but you were.”
Chaos growled.
“Careful.”
The genie continued approaching until he stood several meters away.
“I am Zamfir.”
The name meant nothing to Caleb.
But the power radiating from the being before him was impossible to ignore.
It pressed against his instincts.
Against Chaos.
Against his very soul.
Caleb folded his arms.

“Straight to the point.”
“I have little patience.”
“Yes.”
Zamrif smiled.
“That is why she chose you.”
Caleb became still.
“She?”
“The one living inside your mate.”
Caleb’s eyes darkened.
“Enough games.”
“Games?”
Zamrif looked almost offended.
“My dear Lycan, this entire realm is a game.”
Chaos snarled.
“I don’t like him.”
“Neither do I.”

Caleb took a step forward.
“You know about Iva.”
“Yes.”
“You know about the genie inside her.”
“Yes.”
“You know about the Velinthra.”
At that, Zamfir became silent.
Only for a moment.
But Caleb noticed.
Interesting.
Then the genie smiled again.
“A fascinating thing, fated bonds.”
The genie walked toward one of the gargoyles.
His fingers brushed the stone.
“Such devotion.”
Caleb looked around.
For the first time, a disturbing thought entered his mind.
There were too many gargoyles.
Too many expressions.
Too much detail.
He stared at one nearby.
Its face carried terror.
Its hands seemed frozen in movement.
Almost as though-
Caleb looked toward Zarif.
“What are these?”

The genie smiled.
“What do you think?”
Caleb’s blood cooled.
No.
Impossible.
Zamrif noticed.
“Oh, yes.”
He placed a hand upon the stone figure.
“Visitors.”
Caleb felt his entire body tense.
“They were alive?”
“Once.”
Chaos exploded.
“Monster!”
Zamrif laughed.
“Do not judge too quickly, Lycan.”
“You turned people into stone.”
“Some deserved it.”
“And the others?”
Zamrif looked away.
“Some made poor choices.”
Caleb’s fists clenched.
He was beginning to understand.
Power.
Absolute power.
This realm was built on it.

And the genies sat at its center.
Then Zamrif asked something unexpected.
“Do you love her?”
Caleb froze.
“What?”
“Your mate.”
Caleb’s answer came instantly.
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
No doubt.
Zamrif studied him.
“Enough to sacrifice?”
“Yes.”
“Enough to die?”
“Yes.”
“Enough to lose yourself?”
Caleb became silent.
Because that question was different.
Zamrif smiled faintly.
“Interesting.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“Why am I here?”
Zarif looked toward the ceiling.
“Because she wanted to see you.”
Caleb’s heart skipped.
“She?”

His eyes narrowed.
“You know her.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
A strange expression crossed Zamrif’s face.
For the first time, the arrogance disappeared.
Something older remained.
Something dangerous.
“She was once one of us.”
The world stopped.
Caleb stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“The genie inside Iva-”
“Was not always imprisoned.”
Chaos fell silent.
Caleb’s thoughts raced.
Impossible.

Galeb turned.
A figure entered.
Tall.
Elegant.
Wrapped in silver fabric.
A woman.
Her face was partially hidden.
But her eyes-
Violet.
Brighter than stars.
Ancient.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
The air itself changed around her.
Zarif bowed his head.
Actually bowed.
Caleb noticed.
And that frightened him more than anything.
Because if Zamrif bowed to her…
Then she stood above him.
The woman stopped.
Looked directly at Caleb.
Then smiled.
A smile that made his instincts scream.

He knew the voice.
He had heard it before.
Inside Melisandre’s house.
Inside Iva. But how….?
The woman stepped closer.
“You took longer than expected.”
Caleb felt cold.
Impossible.
No.
The woman smiled.
And her violet eyes glowed.

Zamfir stood at the center of the enormous hall, his violet eyes fixed upon Caleb with an
expression that was impossible to read.
The female genie remained several steps behind him.
Caleb could barely look away from her.
There was something about her presence that disturbed him on a level deeper than fear, because
even though her face was beautiful and her posture almost delicate, every instinct inside him screamed that she was the same being who had invaded Iva’s mind, erased her memories, and
turned his mate into a stranger.
She had been inside Iva.
She had spoken through Iva.
She had controlled her body.
And yet she was standing here now.
Outside of her.
Free.
Caleb’s hands tightened into fists.
“Why?”
The female genie smiled.
Zamfir answered instead.
“Because I know what you seek.”
Caleb slowly turned toward him.
“You know.”
“I know that you seek the Velinthra.”
The name echoed through the hall.
Caleb’s eyes narrowed.
“But Caleb,” Zamfir continued, “you are not the only one seeking it.”
Caleb looked toward the woman.

“If you’re already here, why do you need me?”
She laughed softly.
It was a beautiful sound, but there was nothing warm about it.
“Because, my dear Lycan, the Velinthra cannot simply be taken.”
“Then why send me?”
Zamfir stepped closer.
“Because the stone has a mind of its own.”
Caleb stared at him.
“What?”
“The Velinthra is not an ordinary object.”
Zamfir’s voice became more serious.
“It posseses its own consciousness. Its own will. Its own judgment.”
shook his head.
You expect me to believe that a stone decides who can use it?”
“Yes.”
“And how exactly does it decide?”
“It tests the person who seeks it.”
The female genie smiled.
“And it knows when someone desires it for selfish reasons.”
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“So it rejects anyone who wants its power.”
“Precisely.”
“And you can’t get it.”
Zamfir’s smile disappeared.
“We cannot.”
Caleb’s eyes widened.

For the first time, he understood why they had brought him here.
“You’re using me.”
Zamfir didn’t deny it.
“Of course.”
Rage exploded through Caleb.
“You brought me into this place knowing I could die.”
“Yes.”
“You allowed me to walk through that desert.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the lake would attack me.”
“Yes.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“And you knew that creature was waiting for me.”
Zamfir’s eyes glimmered.
“Every step.”
Caleb’s supernatural energy surged through the hall.
The gargoyles surrounding them seemed to tremble.
“You are all insane.”
Zamfir laughed.
“Why me?”
The genie smiled.
“Because your bloodline is strong enough.”
Caleb stared.
“Strong enough for what?”
“To survive the trials.”
“What trials?”

“The Velinthra chooses them.”
Caleb’s breathing became heavier.
“And you expect me to walk into these trials because you say I can survive them?”
Zamfir shrugged.
“It isn’t that difficult.”
Caleb almost laughed.
“Not that difficult?”
He gestured toward the gargoyles.
“You’ve turned people to stone.”
“They failed.”
“I was nearly killed in your desert.”
“You survived.”
“I was dragged underwater.”
“You survived.”
Caleb’s eyes flashed.
“And you call that easy?”
Zamfir smiled.
“For someone like you?”
“Yes.”
Caleb shook his head.
“You are all completely insane.”
Then Zamfir said something that stopped him cold.
“You would prefer Asha’s deal?”
Caleb froze.
The hall suddenly seemed much colder.
“How do you know about that?”
