The door clicked shut.

Rhys stood there for a long time before suddenly sweeping his arm across the desk.

*Crash!* The case files, the pen holder, and the lawsuit were all swept onto the floor.

The picture frame perched on the corner of the desk fell with them, the glass shattering across the tiles.

In the photo, Clara was holding his arm, her eyes curved into crescents as she smiled.

Clara moved into Shady Lane.

She changed her phone number, saving only three contacts: Simon, Noah, and Daniel.

She rested her palm gently on her flat abdomen.

Although the doctor said she needed bed rest, the sensation of that blood connection was miraculous.

She could feel a tiny life stubbornly taking root inside her. Even after all that pain and turmoil, it hadn't left her.

This was a gift from heaven.

The door was nudged open, and Simon squeezed in carrying two large bags, panting heavily.

"I'm dying! Why doesn't this crappy building have an elevator?"

He dumped the bags on the floor and collapsed into a chair, abandoning all dignity. "That's enough for the basics. I need a break. If I'd known, I would've hired a courier to bring this up."

Clara looked at the sweat on his forehead, pulled out a tissue, and handed it to him. "Aren't you hitting the gym and lifting weights every day? Winded after four flights?"

"What do you know?" Simon took the tissue and wiped his face haphazardly, giving her a side-eye. "That's specialized training! Do I look like I train the 'climbing stairs with groceries' muscle?"

He caught his breath and glanced at Clara's phone on the side. "Well? Any news from Mr. Reed?"

"He just messaged. Said the documents were delivered."

Clara stood up and walked over to the bags to help unpack. "He said Rhys was pretty angry but didn't say if he'd sign or not."
