Seeing the adults huddled together, Felix put down his blocks and ran over. “Are we going to Emily’s house?”
“Felix, do you want to go?” Clara asked.
“Yes!” The little guy nodded vigorously. “Emily said on video chat that it snows in Brighton City.”
He had never seen snow.
Heron Bay had only eternal spring and summer, punctuated by the occasional hurricane.
Clara laughed. “That’s only in winter. There’s no snow in October.”
Felix looked up at her and suddenly asked, “Mommy, do you not want to go back?”
The child’s eyes were too perceptive, so clear that they made Clara panic slightly.
Clara pulled her son into her arms. “Mommy is just worried Felix won’t be used to it.”
“With Mommy there, and Daddy Simon and Daddy Noah, I’m not scared,” Felix said earnestly. “Besides, Emily is getting married. We have to go give her our blessings. It’s polite.”
Clara felt a sting in her nose.
Four years ago, she was a deserter carrying a body full of pain and secrets.
Four years later, she had a career, assets, family and friends who supported her, and a healthy, smart son.
She was no longer the little girl who would hide under the covers and cry all night over one cold remark from Rhys.
She wasn’t the one who had done wrong; what did she have to be afraid of?
“Alright, then Felix comes with us.” Clara kissed Felix’s cheek. “But you have to listen to Daddy Noah and not run off.”
Noah watched from the side, the corners of his lips curving up, but the hand resting on his knee slowly tightened into a fist.
Although he didn’t know why that man hadn’t appeared again recently, the tension in his heart hadn’t relaxed.
Returning to Brighton City meant returning to Rhys’s territory.
If Rhys really wanted to take the child, or if Clara’s heart softened...
He had to be fully prepared.
...
Operation "Wolf Hunt," a two-year undertaking, finally closed its net late one night after the storm passed.
Rhys had a fire burning inside him.
It had been stifling him for over two weeks, keeping him tossing and turning every night.
