Connor’s POV

The second we step into the gym, Drake is already keyed up, like his wolf has caught a

threat on the wind. Something’s happening. I can feel it in the air.

Ryder’s had Lucas keep the men who were hanging around outside under control, just in

case. When Ryder’s instincts start barking, they’re usually right.

Inside, Iron Fang is posted at the entrance like a wall. Elliot, Mason, and Palmer are on

the perimeter, and the three of them are trading sharp words with a cluster of young

warriors. Security. Tension. And no one is smiling.

Then Ryder moves farther in, and I follow-and my stomach drops.

Evelyn is there.

So are Sienna, Archer, and Bridget-future Luna Bridget-wearing workout clothes that

barely qualify as fabric. The kind that turns a gym into a spectacle.

Ryder’s voice cracks through the room. “What the hell is this, Bridget? What are you

wearing?”

They launch into an argument, and I’m barely hearing it because my eyes keep snapping

back to Evelyn.

She doesn’t even look guilty. She just keeps working out.

My nose flares when her scent hits me-bright, citrus-sweet, and dangerously familiar.

Her sports bra is basically a swimsuit top. Her chest is only just contained, and her

stomach-toned, perfect, the one I’ve kissed-shines with sweat I want to taste. Her

shorts are so short it’s obscene. I can’t stop the way my hands shake while I hold Drake

back.

Ryder cuts off the conversation like a guillotine. “We’re going upstairs. Now. Go change.”

He herds Bridget away.

Drake steps forward, voice even, but I hear the promise underneath it. “I’ll handle things

down here. Including the guys outside.”

Ryder doesn’t soften. “Good. Don’t take it easy on them.”

Bridget calls over her shoulder, bright and oblivious. “See you later, ladies!”

Archer and Sienna exchange a glance, then look at Evelyn.

“Out,” I order. “Now. Give us the room.”

“Yes, Beta,” they answer together, murmuring a quick goodbye to Evelyn.

Evelyn doesn’t even pause. She walks to a yoga mat and drops into a stretch like nothing in the world is wrong.

I can’t take it. “What the hell are you doing? And why are you practically naked?”

She looks up at me, calm as sunrise. “I’m working out, Connor. I got hot, so I took the sweatshirt off. How was training?”

Like she’s asking about the weather.

“Don’t do that,” I warn. “Don’t act innocent. You’re the Alpha’s daughter. This isn’t how

you dress in front of a pack full of horny wolves.”

“Not all of them,” she says, and for half a heartbeat something raw flashes across her

face-hurt, sadness-then it’s gone, replaced by her mask. “Besides, why are you so

upset about the Alpha’s daughter getting attention?”

“Evelyn,” I say, low.

Her mouth curves. “Does she turn you on?”

I blow out a breath, because I know bait when I see it.

She steps in closer anyway, eyes sharp. “Does she show up in your dreams? Do you

want her?”

She rises onto her toes and presses her palms to my chest.

I catch her wrists and force her arms down to her sides, pinning them there. I close the distance until her body is flush against mine. Her eyes are bright, glittering up at me. Her lips-those lips-look like an invitation I’m not allowed to accept.

I let her go.

She smirks like she’s won. “Of course. If you’re terrified, just say that. The big, scary Beta -too afraid to take his own woman.”

She bends to grab her duffle, and when she straightens, the teasing is gone. What’s left is heat and fury.

She strides right back into my space. “Reject me. Let me go. If you can’t accept me, then let me go!”

“No,” I snap.

“I, Evelyn Blackwood…”

I don’t let her finish.

I grab her and kiss her.

I kiss her to stop the words. I kiss her because I need it-need the softness of her mouth,

the taste of her, the way she fits. Goddess, she’s perfect. Angry or laughing, stubborn or

sweet, I want all of her.

But wanting her isn’t the same as keeping her safe.

She fights me for a moment, then her resistance breaks. She softens, melting into my body. Her arms slide up around my neck. I press her closer, and a sound slips out of her

when my tongue meets hers.

My hand fists in her ponytail, tilting her head back. I want to mark her so badly it hurts. I drag my mouth along her neck, and she moans, tugging me closer like she’s trying to

climb into me.

“Evelyn,” I murmur, nipping her lower lip.

She smiles.

And then the doors swing open.

“Son, I was told you were here… I need-

My father’s voice cuts off.

Evelyn and I spring apart like we’ve been caught doing something illegal.

I force my face into something neutral. “Uh… yeah, Dad?”

He looks like he’s chewing on rage.

Evelyn recovers first, graceful as ever. “Hello, Beta Curtis. I should be going.” She flashes

him a smile.

He returns it-an actual smile-one I know I’m not about to receive.

“Evelyn,” he says, warm.

“Wait.” I intercept her at the door.

I tug off my long-sleeve shirt, and her gaze drops straight to my bare chest. I want to grin, but my father is right there. Instead, I wrap the shirt around her waist, tying it

securely.

Then I address my guards. “Escort her to her room. Report when she’s there safely.”

“Yes, Beta,” they answer together.

I open the mind-link, cold and clipped. ‘Lucas, Pierce-extra laps. Extra reps. Keep them going until they either pass out or puke. Whatever comes first.’

‘Copy that,’ they respond in sync.

Even through the link, I hear heavy breathing. They’ve already been sprinting since we left. Good. They’ll learn what it costs to disrespect women on our land-or anywhere.

When Evelyn is gone, I turn back. “Okay, Dad. What did you need?”

I try the pretend-nothing-happened tactic.

He just stares.

“My office. Now.”

He walks out. I follow.

Drake’s voice hits my head as soon as we’re out of earshot. ‘Yeah. You’ve really done it

this time. Again.’

‘Not my fault nobody warned me Dad was walking in,’ I shoot back.

Drake doesn’t buy it. I can practically hear the smugness. Can a wolf smirk? Drake can.

In my father’s office, he drops into his chair like a judge taking the bench. “Close the

door.”

I do.

He points with his chin. “Explain why I’m walking in on you making out with the Alpha’s

daughter instead of being with your mate-the future mother of my grandpups.”

My throat tightens. “There are things I can’t explain. I’m doing everything I can to fix it. I

promise.”

His eyes go hard. “A promise means nothing if the Reynolds family thinks we’re

exploiting their precious, innocent daughter. You could destroy her name in seconds.

Have you forgotten who you are?”

“Dad,” I mutter, and it stings, “that’s messed up.”

I instinctively clutch my bare chest like it’s armor.

He glares. “…And put on a damn shirt. I had five she-wolves nearly trip over themselves just walking with me here.”

He grabs a spare and tosses it at me.

I pull it on.

His tone shifts, still harsh, but threaded with something like concern. “Son. Either claim. her, or let her go. And if you let her go, you’ll tell your mother. That will crush her. She

loves Evelyn.”

“I told you-I’m working on it,” I insist.

He exhales, the fight draining out of his shoulders. “If you need help, come to me.

Whatever it is. Do you understand?”

“If I could,” I say quietly, “I’d swear it on the Moon Goddess. The moment I’m able… I will

do what’s right.”

Even if it shatters me.

Even if it shatters her.

As long as she’s safe.

A few hours later, I’m in my office buried in paperwork-the stack my father came

hunting me down to deliver. New building specs for the city, measurements and

materials and approvals. I need to verify everything, then forward it to Ryder.

My door is open.

Citrus.

Evelyn.

She passes by once. I keep reading.

She passes by again. I don’t look up.

The third time, I finally speak without lifting my head. “Do you need something, Evelyn?”

She stops, then peeks around the doorway like she’s just strolling past. “Oh! I wanted

advice. Which shoe-stilettos or thigh-high boots?”

She makes her voice sweet. Innocent.

I finally glance up, annoyed despite myself. “Don’t you have girlfriends for that?”

“I do, but they’re getting ready.” She tilts her head. “Why aren’t you?”

“I’m not going,” I say. “I volunteered to stay here and work.”

Only then do I notice she’s in a robe.

Her expression flickers. “Oh.”

I swallow. “It depends on what you’re wearing. For the shoes.”

She blinks like she didn’t expect me to answer.

Then her eyes light up. “Oh!”

She opens the robe.

I nearly fall out of my chair.

A black bodysuit dress clings to her like a sin. Side cutouts. Bare skin. The hem stops just

below her ass. There is no universe where she’s wearing that out.

Her gaze locks onto mine, like she can hear every thought I’m trying to bury. “I’m legal,

Connor. I can wear it. So-which shoe?”

She points her toes one way, then the other, teasing.

“The boot,” I manage, voice rough.

My mouth has gone desert-dry. At least the boots cover something. Barely.

She ties the robe shut like she didn’t just set my world on fire. “Okay. Thanks. See you tomorrow, I guess. I’ll have Alpha Patrick escort me tonight.”

She smiles, bright and cruel. “Have a good night, Connor!”

Then she’s gone.

And my quiet evening is dead.

Because there’s no way I’m sitting here while she walks into a club dressed like that-

with my cousin.

Damn it.

Looks like I’m going too.
