Then he stops, staring at me, watching me intently. I don’t need my wolf to know that he’s being sincere. I can see it with every motion of his body, hear it in the way he’s pleading with me to give him a chance.

“What do I smell like to you?” I ask him.

“Gardenias. I have several of them at the place where I live. I don’t live in any pack, I move around, so I have my own place. And you smell like my gardenia bushes in full bloom. What do I smell like to you?”

“Sounds yummy,” he says, and I duck my head so he can’t see my smile. “My mother makes it. She’s a very good cook.”

I look at him a moment. “I was just going to get some water. Did…. Would you like to join me?”

I come awake slowly, feeling warm and comfortable, my mate’s pine scent filling my nose.

I shift, stretching to work out the kinks in my body.

“Mmm, good morning,” Hunter’s sleepy voice says from behind me, as he buries his face into my hair, kissing the crook of my neck just behind my mate mark. It sends shivers through my body, just as his deep, husky voice does.

“Stiff, but well–rested.”

He chuckles behind me. “You should be, you slept nearly a day and a half.”

“Do you think he went to join forces with Alpha Joshua?” I ask him.

“It’s possible. Ezra wants to bring Owen this weekend. I’d like for you to talk to Brooklyn about that, see how she’s feeling. And she found her mate.”

“WHAT? I was only out one day!!” I say, feeling like I’ve already missed so much.

He chuckles, leaning in to kiss my forehead. “A lot is happening, my love. But yes, remember the doctor you talked to Margot about?”

“His name is Dr. Caspian, and he is Brooklyn’s fated mate.”

“How is she handling that?” I ask

“Better than I would have expected. I checked him out yesterday, and he seems to understand that she’s very delicate right now. Although, I‘ m not sure delicate is a term I’d use to describe Brooklyn any longer.”

“Why’s that?”

“She was incredible sewing up the warriors after the battle. They’ve all complimented her and for whatever reason, they’ve all sort of rallied behind her. They cleaned up her house, removed her father’s body, fixed her door, washed the inside so the blood is gone. No one asked them to do it, they did it on their own. I even heard that one of our female warriors offered to teach Brooklyn to fight if she wanted to.”
