The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 344

Ethan was still asleep, and she didn’t want to wake him. They were supposed to have returned to Havencrest City after their business at the Emperor Palace was finished, but the last few days had taken a toll on Ethan’s body. He’d caught a chill and came down with a fever the day before. The doctor they called said he still had some internal inflammation and advised plenty of rest.

Ramona heard about a resort with natural hot springs near Emperor Palace, and the doctor agreed that a soak could help soothe his body and mind, dispelling the lingering chill and dampness from his system. So, Ramona changed their plans, and they stayed in Kyro City for two more days.

The hot springs did wonders for Ethan’s recovery. Sharing the bath with Ramona was, of course, a blissful experience from the inside out. Ramona had actually considered extending their stay until the following week, when they could fly directly from Kyro City to Myridia Country. But then Nova called with news about the Covington Group.

Though Ramona maintained a calm exterior, her good mood vanished. Melinda was a master at being a nuisance. She knew perfectly well that Ramona had already dealt with the Holt family, and now she was rolling out the red carpet for Brianna?

Ramona had no intention of hiding it from Ethan. After finishing her call with Nova, she told him everything. Gallop Inc. was a potential rival to the Jordon Group. The news instantly darkened Ethan’s expression, and he was ready to book the earliest flight back to Havencrest City the next morning.

But Ramona stopped him. She had scheduled three physical therapy sessions for him, with the last one being the next morning. Seeing how much his health had improved, she insisted he complete the treatment. Even if Gallop Inc. was partnering with the Covington Group, their rushing back wouldn’t stop it.

Ethan couldn’t win against her and reluctantly agreed to leave after his therapy. While he wasn't at the Jordon Group headquarters, he had his team start investigating Gallop Inc.’s projects in Havencrest City and monitor their every move. Gallop Inc. might have a strong background, but it was no match for the Jordon Group’s sheer financial might. If Ethan was willing to spend big, making Gallop Inc. suffer a few quiet losses would be child’s play.

No one was allowed to bully Ramona. Not even the Covington Group. For her, Ethan was willing to bend Zadkiel Jordon’s principles.

Ramona knew what he was thinking, but she didn’t want to escalate things to that level. If Gallop Inc. and the Covington Group were engaging in a legitimate partnership, she had no grounds to object; otherwise, she wouldn’t be fit to lead the company. But… if Brianna was the representative for Gallop Inc., that was a different story. In a way, Melinda had just handed her an opportunity to strike back.

“Okay, I understand now,” Ramona said after finishing her call with Nova, a plan already forming in her mind. No wonder Brianna could represent Gallop Inc.—Jotham had given her the research data Ramona had worked on. He’d done something that despicable and still tried to fool her? The memory of Jotham’s whispered apologies made Ramona’s stomach churn. She felt so nauseous she almost threw up.

“Ramona, are you okay?” Nova asked, concerned by the sound on the other end of the line.

“I’m fine. But what about you… did Holden give you trouble for taking his phone?” Ramona hadn’t wanted Nova to do something so risky. If she had known Nova would take such a chance, she wouldn’t have said anything. But if Holden decided to press charges, Ramona had already decided she would take full responsibility and protect Nova at all costs.

“No…” Nova paused, feeling the lie was too obvious. “He… hasn’t found out yet.”
