“I remember.” Ramona’s dark eyes lit up instantly. She cherished every moment with Ethan, and she would never forget their first meeting. At the time, she had thought their marriage would be one of convenience. Ethan had claimed he wasn't interested in her inheritance and was only getting married to appease his family. Looking back, he had probably said that to put her at ease. And he knew, of course, that she had no designs on the Jordon Group. That was why their finances had always been separate. He had given her his supplementary credit card, but she had rarely used it.
“Tell me,” Ethan said, his rich voice softening until it sent a shiver down her spine. His voice was so beautiful—masculine yet incredibly gentle, a sexy combination that could throw her into a state of delightful confusion at any moment.
“It wasn’t just because your family was pressuring you.”
“Mr. Jordon… was just interested in me and was looking for an excuse to marry me,” Ramona teased, knowing her words would hit their mark. Thinking back, even his gaze had been hesitant back then. No wonder she had felt so nervous during that first dinner. She had thought it was his powerful aura, but now she knew that he had also been tentative and cautious, carefully testing the waters.
Who wouldn’t be a little shy and awkward around someone they liked?
Ethan nodded, readily admitting it. The moment she finished speaking, he captured her lips in a tender kiss. He kissed her again and again before continuing. “I said I needed an obedient wife who would cooperate with me in everything.”
When he had said that, he had meant something entirely different from what she had thought. Now, he felt the need to clarify. “What I meant was, when I want to do something for her, she will obediently cooperate with me.”
“Yes. The doctor said I need to be a little more careful.”
“I told you to take care of yourself…” Ramona started to panic, but Ethan cut her off. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. I have to grow old with you, remember?”
Ramona frowned, her hands covering his on her waist. “Tomorrow, I’m taking you to the hospital for a full check-up. If you’re not feeling well, you have to tell me. It’s not like we can’t afford treatment. No matter how bad it is, we can take our time and get you better.”
