Wisteria’s outburst cut Yancey off. She always had a short fuse when it came to him, because he had a knack for hitting her right where she was most insecure.
After her words hung in the air, she saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes, followed by a complex mix of emotions. Seeing him so taken aback made her feel terrible. The atmosphere grew heavy, thick with an awkward silence.
Wisteria turned and went into her room, closing the door behind her. She didn’t turn on the lights, just threw herself onto the bed and pulled the covers over her head, letting the darkness envelop her. She knew better than anyone that her excuses only made her seem more pathetic.
It was just as her mother had said to the Huxleys on her deathbed.
“She’s just like her father…”
“If it becomes too much, just… get rid of her.”
“…”
Wisteria didn’t know when she fell asleep, but when she woke up, the sky was just beginning to lighten. She walked out of the bedroom, assuming Yancey had already left. To her surprise, as she headed for the bathroom, she saw him sitting up on the large sofa in the living area.
He had slept the whole night there with only a thin blanket for warmth.
“Yancey… you’re still here?” she asked, a wave of guilt washing over her.
Yancey, still groggy, mumbled a reply. He took a moment to clear his head, put on his glasses, and then stood up to smooth out his wrinkled shirt. “I was a bit tired last night, so I didn’t leave. Did you sleep well?” He walked past her, taking off his watch as he went to wash his face.
Wisteria thought to herself that no matter how she’d slept, it was definitely better than his night on the sofa.
And deep down… she probably didn’t want to rely on him.
Though the realization saddened him, Yancey accepted it. “You should focus on passing the Covington Group’s assessment. Use your abilities to silence the Huxleys and everyone else. People have to grow up. No matter how difficult things get, you haven’t given up yet, have you?”
He knew she probably wouldn’t like hearing this. He didn’t really have the right to lecture anyone. But he couldn’t help himself.
Even if… it made her hate him.
“Yancey… actually, there is one other way for me to leave the Huxleys.”
