The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 366

Yancey didn’t know how to explain. He was a nervous wreck, terrified she would think he was trying to pressure her again. But hearing him repeatedly emphasize the word “misunderstanding,” Wisteria’s heart went cold.

Yancey quickly changed the subject, steering back to what she had been about to say.

Wisteria forced a smile. “The other way is… I could get married.”

Yancey’s eyes flickered. He opened his mouth to speak, but she patted his arm before he could.

“So, Mr. Covington, could I trouble you to keep an eye out for any suitable candidates? Maybe set me up on a few blind dates?” she asked lightly. “My standards aren’t high. I only have one requirement: he has to have some standing in Havencrest City. At least enough that the Huxleys can’t just push him around.”

“…”

Wisteria’s words were delivered with a smile, but each one fell like a piece of ice on Yancey’s heart.

He hesitated, as if processing her request. “So all this time, when you were dating other men… it was to get married?”

“Of course,” she said with a nonchalant shrug, turning away.

“And you didn’t have feelings for any of them?” he pressed.

“Naturally,” Wisteria replied coolly. “I’m not some hopeless romantic. How can you develop feelings for someone after just a few days? Besides, someone like me isn’t going to find true love anyway.”

“…” Yancey clenched his jaw. He felt a breath he’d been holding for a long time finally release, but the relief was followed by a bitter ache.

Wisteria turned back to him. “Yancey, you?”

“Me,” he stated flatly. “In the Covington family, is there a more suitable candidate?”

She had only been guessing, but he had admitted it directly.

“Are you joking? If you entered into a sham marriage with me, Fenton would have a heart attack.” She scoffed, but Yancey stepped in front of her, his entire demeanor shifting. All traces of humor were gone.

“It wouldn't be a sham marriage,” he said. “It would be a real one.”

The words hung in the air, and Wisteria felt as if a string inside her had been violently plucked. Yancey watched her, his gaze calm and steady.
