Their provocation of Ethan was a task posted by a mysterious user. The Jordon family was a top-tier dynasty; the thrill of intimidating them was too good to pass up.
“Someone on the dark web is targeting the Jordon family,” Ramona said, her voice filled with alarm. The two men were, as suspected, just small-time thugs who couldn't provide any more information. But that only made the situation more terrifying.
Ethan’s expression hardened. He made a quick phone call, issuing a few instructions before turning back to Ramona. “The Jordon Group is a major player on the international stage. It’s inevitable that we’ll attract envy. When business rivals run out of options, they sometimes resort to these kinds of tactics.”
To Ethan, it was almost to be expected. He had shared the new information with the police. For now, all they could do was be vigilant and wait for the person in the shadows to make another move. He had sent a message to Zadkiel last night, but had yet to receive a reply.
“Ethan,” Ramona said, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Maybe I should talk to Mr. Covington, to Wilfred. Ask him if I can postpone my trip…”
“Even if you postpone it, you’ll still have to go eventually, won’t you?” Ethan knew her thoughts perfectly. She could worry about him, but she couldn’t stay by his side forever.
Ramona was speechless. Ethan continued, “Go, and come back quickly. Don’t forget, we still have a wedding to plan.”
“…”
Meanwhile, in Myridia Country, night had just fallen.
The man’s slow, deliberate words were laced with a deadly promise. Melinda knew his word was more reliable than any talisman, but at that moment, she couldn’t feel any joy. The years of pent-up grievances came pouring out. The man on the phone was not a Yarrow, but he had always been more of a brother to her than anyone in her own family.
Melinda was an illegitimate daughter, and as such, she had been relentlessly bullied at the Yarrow estate. When she was ten, she had been deliberately abandoned in the mountains. She walked for two days and two nights, unknowingly crossing the border. A man had pointed a gun at her head, but all she could do was stare at the canteen of water hanging from his belt.
Later, she returned to the Yarrow family and grew up under the secret protection of that man, who became like a brother to her. She saw him as her only family, and he, in turn, would move heaven and earth to help her with any problem she faced. It was only much later that she learned his true identity. He was Lester, the infamous leader of the world’s most renowned mercenary group, the Airgap Alliance.
By the time Melinda came of age, the Airgap Alliance was the stuff of legends, its members spread across every corner of the globe.
