The Perfect Wife's Perfect Revenge novel Chapter 975

"Where's Mrs. Shannon? I thought you would bring her along. How are things back at the apartment?"

A glint flashed in Layne's dark eyes. "I sent her back. I hired a cleaning crew to take care of the mess. Thank God the firefighters were already nearby when the blaze started. They put it out immediately. Everyone is safe, and there wasn't any major property damage. I was just coming to pick you up so we could go check if any of your things were ruined."

Maeve's heart sank into her stomach. Damn it. How could the timing be that perfect? That old bat Mrs. Shannon had the devil's own luck. With the amount of flour scattered right next to the gas stove, any open flame should have triggered a blast massive enough to severely injure her, even if she had tried to run. Who could have predicted a fire truck would be idling right next door?

And the most bizarre part of all was that Mrs. Shannon had escaped without a single scratch. It made absolutely zero sense.

"It's a miracle, honestly."

Maeve muttered casually, pretending to be relieved.

Layne guided her to the passenger seat and studied her face through the rearview mirror.

"Mrs. Shannon is completely fine, so you don't need to stress. The apartment is safe, but I had her head over to the main estate. She's currently cooking dinner, waiting for us to get back."

Maeve let out an awkward "Oh." Layne could clearly sense the inexplicable dip in her mood.

It wasn't just the failure of her trap for Mrs. Shannon that was eating at her. What truly left Maeve devastated and unmoored was the news about Quinton and Delilah. When the hell did those two hook up behind her back?

She would have to go back and face them sooner or later. Noticing her distracted expression, Layne spoke up.

"What's wrong? Is something on your mind?"

Terrified of raising his suspicions, Maeve instantly snapped back into her sweet, radiant persona.
