153 Chapter 153 You All My Witnesses
Blanche’s POV 1
That afternoon, I walked out of the hospital after finishing my shift and bumped into Demetrius.
He looked like he’d been waiting for me, his face lighting up the moment he spotted me.
When I got closer, Demetrius’s voice was soft. “There’s a class reunion tonight. You interested?”
I was ready to say no–Oswald was still hospitalized, after all.
But Zain’s voice cut through from behind me before I could respond. “Blanche, Grandpa’s already expecting us.”
I spun around and saw Zain’s car sitting in the hospital parking lot, just a short distance from where Demetrius and I stood.
Zain stayed put in the driver’s seat, just rolling his window down to call out to me.
I gave Demetrius an apologetic glance. “Sorry, Demetrius. I’ve got plans today. Rain check?”
Demetrius never pushed–it wasn’t his style.
Disappointment flickered across his face, but he kept it brief.
He just smiled and nodded. “Sure thing. I’ll try asking again another time.”
I waved goodbye and headed to Zain’s car.
I slipped into the back seat like always.
Watching me choose the back seat, Demetrius’s lips curved into a knowing smile.
Oswald wasn’t at my hospital. He was at Oakwood’s top medical facility.
The drive would eat up more than thirty minutes.
Once I settled in, silence stretched between Zain and me. He ignored me completely, pulling out his phone to start a video call on WhatsApp.
A contact sat pinned at the very top–no name, just a kiss emoji. Whether that was intentional or not, I couldn’t tell.
The call connected almost instantly.
Joanna’s face filled the screen.
“Zain, everything okay?” Joanna’s voice was gentle.
Zain kept his eyes on the road, stealing quick peeks at his phone. “Just wanted to video chat and see Carry”
Joanna’s voice turned coaxing, “Carry, come here. Daddy wants to see you.”
Carry’s bright voice echoed from the phone. “Yay! I’m coming!”

Pure excitement radiated from her tone.
Joanna flipped the camera toward Carry, who bounced over from the couch and appeared on screen.
“Daddy, are you finished yet? I missed you so much!” Carry’s excitement was infectious.
Zain replied, “Daddy still needs to visit your great–grandpa, but I’ll be home later.”
“Drive carefully, Daddy,” Carry said with concern.
Zain agreed and asked, “Were you a good girl at dinner?”
“Yes! I ate a whole small bowl of oatmeal,” Carry announced proudly.
Zain smiled. “Perfect. Make sure you listen to Miss Joanna and Grandma Lillian at home, and I’ll bring you something special when I get
back.”
Carry clapped her tiny hands and bounced with joy. “Yay! I love you, Daddy!”
Zain’s smile deepened. “Alright, go play now.”
Carry chirped her agreement and skipped away.
I turned my face toward the window, desperately trying to tune out the conversation between my daughter and Zain.
But the harder I fought to ignore it, the clearer every word became in my ears.
Carry was telling her daddy she loved him, but I was the one there for her every single day.
I couldn’t remember the last time Carry said “love” to me.
On the other end, Joanna asked softly, “Zain, should I hang up now?”
Zain said, “No, keep it going. I like hearing you all.”
Joanna laughed quietly. “Okay, I’ll just prop the phone up so you can see us.”
“Perfect, Zain replied.
Carry’s voice kept drifting from the phone in bursts.
“Grandma Lillian, look at this! Isn’t it gorgeous? Should I make one for you?”
“Miss Joanna, look! I sculpted a tiny you.”
“Miss Joanna, Miss Suzanne said we have a field trip next weekend. Will you come with me?”
“Grandma Lillian, do you need water? I’ll grab you some.”
Everyone at home sounded so happy, with laughter and cheerful chatter filling the air.
Even while driving, Zain would chime in with comments here and there.
He might not have been physically at Blissfield Villa, but it felt like he was right there with them, sharing in all the happiness.

I curled up in the back seat, trying to make myself invisible, terrified that Joanna might catch a glimpse of how broken I looked on the
video call.
I was Zain’s wife and Carry’s mother. Yet sitting there, I felt like a complete outsider in my own family.
Every second of that drive was torture.
I started counting the tree shadows flashing past the window, but quickly lost count as my thoughts wandered.
Finally, Zain pulled into a parking spot. He exchanged a few words with Joanna, then ended the call.
Before heading up to see Oswald, I stopped at a flower shop, picked out a bouquet, and carefully selected a fruit basket.
The basket was too heavy for me to manage. Zain noticed and stepped over. “Here, let me handle that.”
I released my grip, letting him take it.
I clutched the bouquet while he carried the fruit basket, and we walked into the hospital side by side.
When we reached the hospital room, I saw it was crowded with visitors.
Donovan and Ophelia were there, along with Drew and Nicholas, plus several of Oswald’s longtime friends.
Thankfully, it was a VIP suite with plenty of room.
When Zain and I entered together, every head turned our way.
Oswald looked over, his smile brightening considerably.
He stretched out his hand, gesturing for me to come closer. “Come here, Blanche, sit beside me.”
I approached with the bouquet, set it down, and said, “Grandpa, I hope you heal quickly and live a long, healthy life.”
Zain stepped forward too, placing the fruit basket with the other gifts.
After straightening up, he asked, “How are you feeling today, Grandpa?”
Oswald beamed at Zain and me, then took our hands and pressed them together, his voice warm and tender. “I don’t need to live forever.
As long as you two are happy, even if I died tomorrow, it would be worth it.”
frowned. “Don’t say things like that, Grandpa.”
But Zain just smiled and said, “Don’t worry, Grandpa. Blanche and I will be fine, I promise.”
As he spoke, he pulled me closer, his arm sliding around my waist.
He did it right in front of everyone, completely unbothered by the audience,
I felt incredibly uncomfortable inside, but I swallowed it down and acted like everything was normal.
Oswald only heard Zain’s promise, not mine, so he looked at me expectantly, clearly waiting for my response.
I could only force a smile and play along. “Yes, I’ll stay with Zain and do my best.”

Across the room, Drew and Nicholas were watching the scene unfold by the hospital bed.
Drew’s eyes narrowed as he sneered, “So fake.”
He was obviously talking about me.
Nicholas elbowed him. “What did you say?”
Drew didn’t bother repeating himself. He just rolled his eyes at Nicholas and walked out of the room.
Oswald had made his wishes known to everyone, and now he’d finally gotten the response he wanted.
He looked around the room at each person, then announced with all the authority of the family patriarch, “Since you all witnessed that, I
suppose that makes you all my witnesses.”
Some people quickly agreed with a “yes,” while others looked away, clearly displeased.
I couldn’t care less what any of them thought.
After spending some time with Oswald, I excused myself to use the restroom, desperate to escape that suffocating room for a moment
of fresh air.
After using the restroom, I was walking back when someone called out.
“Stop right there,” a voice said. It was Drew.
I turned around and saw Drew lurking in the shadows.
He stepped into the light, his face visible now, disgust written all over his features.
He approached, looking down at me with a sneer. “What’s the point of clinging to the title of Mrs. Jacob and refusing to let go?”
