187 Chapter 187 A Deliberate Silence
Heidi had breakfast ready and caught a taxi to the hospital, arriving in the morning. 1
Rush hour traffic crawled along, and she felt her nerves fraying as she worried Carry might be hungry without anything to eat.
Earlier, Zain had phoned Heidi, telling her to prepare breakfast and bring it over when convenient. Heidi had asked, “Mr. Jacob, you’re
going to work, and Ms. Vins is heading to the lab. Who’s going to stay with Miss Carry?”
Zain had answered, “Sue’s mother will be there.”
Hearing that Mrs. Jacob would be present, Heidi finally relaxed a little.
She’d taken extra care with Carry’s breakfast, making everything particularly special, which took longer than usual.
After stepping out of the taxi, she rushed anxiously through the hospital corridors carrying the food container, finally reaching the
room.
But when she entered, neither I nor Carry were anywhere to be found.
She placed the food container on the bedside table before heading to the nurses‘ station to politely inquire about Carry’s whereabouts.
The nurse, recognizing Carry’s name, quickly explained, “Carry developed a dangerously high fever and lost consciousness. She was
rushed to the emergency room.”
Heidi stood frozen, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Panic overwhelmed her, leaving her completely lost about what to do next.
The nurse had to call her name twice before she finally responded, “Yes, I need to contact Mr. Jacob and Mrs. Jacob.” She hurried off to
make the calls.
Zain’s POV
I sat in a meeting with my phone on silent, but the caller ID still appeared on the conference room screen.
Seeing Heidi’s name, dread filled me–something must have happened to Carry. I immediately stopped the meeting and stepped outside to take the call.
The moment I answered, Heidi’s shaking, tearful voice came through: “Mr. Jacob, something terrible has happened… Miss Carry was just taken to the emergency room.”
It felt like an iron fist had clenched around my heart. Before my brain could process the information, my feet were already moving.
I didn’t waste another word–just strode with purpose straight toward the executive elevator.
Only as I pressed the button to descend did I manage to speak. “Got it. I’m on my way now.”
After ending the call, I watched the elevator numbers drop, my mind spinning in chaos.

I couldn’t stop thinking, ‘What if I’m too late? What if something happens to Carry…
Guilt crashed over me–I should have listened to Blanche, should never have brought Carry to the hospital.
By the time I reached the parking garage, my hands trembled so violently I could barely get the key into the ignition.
I had no memory of the drive to the hospital–my heart hammered in my throat the entire way, every red light stretching into forever.
When Desmond’s call came in, I couldn’t bear to look at the screen. What if it was Heidi with terrible news? I wasn’t sure I could take it.
Relief flooded me–it wasn’t Heidi.
Arriving at the hospital, I found Heidi pacing frantically outside the emergency room, her face ashen.
The moment she spotted me, she stopped and looked at me, her voice shaking. “Mr. Jacob, you’re here.”
My eyes were bloodshot, my voice rough. “How’s Carry?”
Heidi shook her head, tears threatening to spill. “No doctor has come out yet. I don’t know anything.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, jaw clenched so tight it ached.
My thoughts scattered wildly, heart pounding against my ribs.
I collapsed onto the bench, hunched forward, pressing my palms against my forehead as I silently begged for my daughter’s safety.
Watching me like this, Heidi opened her mouth to speak but swallowed her words.
With Carry’s condition still unknown, she decided silence was best.
Several minutes ticked by before I suddenly raised my head. “Where’s Blanche?”
Heidi turned to me and shook her head. “When I got here, Sue’s mother wasn’t around. I have no idea where she went.”
At this, my eyebrows drew together with worry.
I pulled out my phone for a quick check. I’d sent a message to Ms. Callum, asking her to come to the hospital and stay with Carry–but
still no response from her.
Despite Blanche’s silence, I couldn’t believe she’d ever ignore our daughter’s welfare.
I assumed she must be dealing with something urgent and had to step out briefly.
But after waiting for a while, Blanche still hadn’t appeared.
Finally, I decided to call her.
The line connected, but no one answered.
I tried several more times, but still nothing.
Confusion washed over me. I couldn’t tell if Blanche was deliberately ignoring my calls or simply hadn’t noticed them.
Just as anxiety began to consume me, the emergency room doors flew open.

I jumped to my feet, voice trembling with concern, “Doctor, how’s my daughter? Is she okay?”
The doctor, adjusting his slipping glasses, removed his mask and informed me, “She’s stable now. She’ll need to spend the night in the pediatric ICU, though. Once her condition improves, we can move her to a regular room.”
I released a long, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight on my chest finally lift.
The doctor noticed my relief but couldn’t help scolding me: “Carry’s just a young child! As parents, you need to be more responsible.
How could you leave her here completely alone?”
I frowned, sounding somewhat defensive. “Wasn’t her mother supposed to be here?”
The doctor interrupted me, voice sharper. “If her mother had actually been present, this wouldn’t have happened.”
My expression froze as the truth finally hit me–Blanche hadn’t come at all.
The doctor continued speaking, but I barely heard the words; they seemed to fade into nothing.
Right now, all I wanted to understand was–why hadn’t Blanche shown up?
Fury ignited inside me, and I kept calling her repeatedly.
But every single time–no answer.
This time, I knew with certainty–there was no way Blanche hadn’t seen my calls; she was deliberately refusing to pick up.
By ignoring my messages and calls, she’d nearly allowed our daughter to fall into real danger.
Thank God Carry was safe. But if anything had happened to her…
I couldn’t even let my mind go there.
Blanche’s POV
After Amber left, I finished my breakfast.
Vincent hadn’t slept at all through the night. Stubble shadowed his jaw, and dark circles ringed his eyes.
Even so, he showed no signs of wanting to leave.
Right now, Vincent sat quietly beside the bed, fruit knife in hand, carefully peeling an apple with deliberate movements.
The apple skin came away in one continuous ribbon, hanging elegantly in the air.
Despite exhaustion and stubble making him look slightly worn, even just sitting there with his head bent, he created a scene worth
capturing–like something from a tender film.
My phone, sitting on the nightstand, kept lighting up repeatedly. I knew messages–maybe even calls–were coming through, but I simply
ignored them, refusing to look.
Vincent noticed too. When he glanced over, he caught Zain’s name illuminating the screen.

Seeing that I wasn’t reaching for my phone, he stayed quiet.
But once he’d finished peeling the apple, he finally asked, “You’re really not going to take his call?”
I knew exactly who he meant–Zain.
After a moment’s pause, I finally said, “No, I’m not answering.”
I figured Zain was probably calling because he wanted me there for Carry at the hospital.
But in my current condition, how could I even show up for Carry?
Even if I weren’t sick, I wouldn’t want to go anyway.
Carry doesn’t need me. Why keep making myself the joke? I thought.
Seeing how certain I was, Vincent couldn’t help but grin, then carefully sliced the apple into small pieces, arranging them perfectly on
the plate.
He picked up a piece with a toothpick and offered it to me. I didn’t refuse, happily eating each bite.
Thinking about my attitude toward Zain, Vincent couldn’t stop smiling–the grin never faded from his lips.
He kept reminding himself, ‘As long as I stay patient, and Zain keeps messing up, someday Blanche and I will be together!
I had once made him a promise–now it was finally time for me to honor that promise.
Vincent’s obvious smile caught my attention and made me curious.
“Vincent, what are you smiling about?” I asked.
Vincent looked at me, his smile growing even wider. “I’m just happy–you’ve finally stopped caring about him.”
