307 Chapter 307 A Quiet Threat
307 Chapter 307 A Quiet Threat
Blanche’s POV
I rushed up from the underground parking garage to the mall’s upper levels, sweat beading on my skin as I tried to catch my breath.
Despite the bitter winter weather, my body felt clammy and overheated.
But as I approached the store I’d been browsing earlier, Zain’s voice reached my ears.
I heard him questioning the sales staff, “Where’s Mrs. Jacob?”
The employees looked at each other uncertainly.
Then a woman who appeared to be the manager stepped forward and responded, “Mr. Jacob, Mrs. Jacob went to the restroom.”
Her answer came without any hesitation, her face completely composed.
Standing in the doorway, I caught every single word of
her response.
Zain’s brow furrowed, his voice cutting and clearly refusing to accept this. “Is that right?”
Before the clerk could respond, I walked forward myself, startled. “What are you doing here?”
I stared directly at Zain, obvious suspicion in my gaze. What’s his deal today? I wondered.
When Zain saw me appear, his face relaxed into a small smile. “I figured you might be getting tired, so I thought I’d come pick you up.”
I looked at him, maintaining my composure. “Well, I’m finished shopping. Let’s head out.”
Truth be told, if I’d taken the time to really browse, there were several pieces in the store that I actually found appealing.
But right now, I’d completely lost any interest in shopping.
Seeing me about to leave without purchasing anything, Zain’s eyes sharpened, his voice dropping low: “Not even one item?”
I nodded. “Right, nothing caught my eye.”
Zain quickly suggested, “Then let’s visit some other stores. I can come with you.”
I let out a tired sigh. “No, honestly, I’m fine. I don’t feel like browsing anymore.”
Zain studied me, only then noticing how bright red my lips looked.
Rather than asking about clothing again, he narrowed his eyes, sounding genuinely confused, “What’s wrong with your lips? Why are they so red?”
I froze momentarily, realizing my lips were still flushed because Vincent had kissed me.
Of course, I could never tell Zain about that.
My eyes darted away as I invented a quick lie. “I felt some lint earlier so I wiped it off–I guess that made my lips turn red.”
The excuse was clearly flimsy, but Zain’s eyes
narrowed, obviously not entirely buying it. “Is that so?”
I answered without hesitation. “Yes.”

Seeing how assured I seemed, Zain didn’t press the issue further. “Fine, let’s go. I’ll accompany you while you browse.”
Given how insistent Zain was being, I decided not to fight it anymore and simply agreed. “Okay,” I replied.
Zain guided me upstairs again so we could look at shoes and handbags together.
In the end, I settled on a designer purse. It was compact, but carried a seven–figure price.
After we exited the boutique with the bag, Zain turned to me and asked, “Is there anything else you’d like to purchase?”
Noticing how late it was getting, I shook my head. “No, I have dinner plans tonight.”
Zain frowned. “Dinner plans with whom?”
I answered truthfully, “Demetrius asked me to dinner.”
Zain persisted, “So what’s his real motive for inviting
you?”
I shrugged, “My test is tomorrow–he said he wants to wish me luck.”
Zain didn’t protest, just stated firmly, “Then I’m coming too.”
I couldn’t figure him out at all, which made me pause for a moment, but I shook my head. “That’s not necessary, I’ll be perfectly fine.”
Zain stubbornly maintained, “I just don’t feel right about you going alone.”
I looked up at him, a trace of doubt in my eyes.
‘Is he genuinely concerned about me, or just trying to monitor me?‘ I wondered silently.
But I kept that thought to myself and simply told Zain, “It’s just dinner with Demetrius. There’s no need to worry about me.”
Zain sensed something shifting within himself.
After a brief moment, he said softly, “All right.”
Then he added, “I’ll come get you when you’re finished.”
I nodded. “Okay.”
We didn’t exchange another word as we walked
downstairs together in silence.
When we reached the mall’s entrance, I didn’t have to wait long before Demetrius’s car pulled up.
Zain noticed it too–a black Audi, understated in appearance but with a price tag that most people could only fantasize about.
For ordinary people, Demetrius already represented the upper echelon.
The problem was, with Zain and Vincent both orbiting around me, Demetrius couldn’t exactly command
center stage.
Demetrius got out of the car, and for someone who rarely wore formal attire, he looked incredibly polished tonight–black overcoat, perfectly fitted suit. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he was dressed more for a romantic evening than to encourage me before my exam.
For some reason, seeing Demetrius dressed like this made Zain feel uncomfortable about me having dinner
with him.

But since he’d already given his consent, Zain just tightened his jaw and remained silent, reminding himself it was only dinner.
Demetrius walked toward us, his coat flowing softly with each stride. His hair was impeccably styled, his forehead smooth and clear. With those sharp features and the elegant coat, he looked almost ethereal–like he’d stepped straight from a portrait.

I watched Demetrius approach, then turned to Zain with a composed expression. “You should head home. I’m having dinner with Demetrius,” I said, my voice soft
but resolute.
Hearing that, Zain felt a piercing pain in his chest.
He wanted to object, but forced himself to suppress his emotions and nodded. “All right,” he said quietly.
When Demetrius reached us, Zain looked straight at him, a courteous yet pointed smile on his face. “Thank you for entertaining my wife tonight, Mr. Jake. Please look after her well. I’ll come by later to collect her–no need for you to bother with driving her home.”
With just a few casual words, Zain smoothly laid out
the situation.
He referred to me as his wife and casually mentioned that he’d be picking me up later. That was sufficient to eliminate any hopes Demetrius might have been harboring.
Demetrius understood the message perfectly. He maintained his neutral expression and didn’t even look in Zain’s direction.
I didn’t give Zain’s words much thought. I walked straight down the steps toward Demetrius, not glancing back.
But I hadn’t taken more than a few steps when Zain called out again, “Honey, hold on.”
When I heard him call me “honey,” I instinctively closed my eyes briefly.
Zain approached, wrapped his arms around me, and kissed me softly on the forehead. “Enjoy yourself,” he whispered.
The moment he released me, I quickly stepped out of
his embrace.
I shot Zain a furious look, seething with irritation, but said nothing.
Demetrius witnessed the entire exchange; recognizing that Blanche wasn’t pleased about it, he stepped forward without delay and protected her by drawing
her behind him.
At the same time, Demetrius spoke in a calm, measured voice, “Don’t worry, Mr. Jacob. Blanche is completely secure with me–there’s no safer place.”
Zain’s lips curved into a subtle smile, his tone carrying a quiet threat. “She’d better be.”
Demetrius didn’t bother responding. He simply took Blanche’s hand and led her directly to the black Audi.
Once they were inside, Demetrius pressed the accelerator and drove away quickly.
After they’d been traveling for some time, Demetrius suddenly turned to Blanche and asked, “Are you chilly?”
With the traffic light turning red, Demetrius finally had

a chance to really examine her–and that’s when he spotted Blanche’s lips. They appeared distinctly red and slightly swollen.
As a physician, he didn’t need to wonder. ‘Without question, someone definitely kissed her intensely,‘ Demetrius thought to himself.
Still, he chose not to mention it.
Demetrius attempted to dismiss those thoughts, but the more he tried to ignore it, the more he couldn’t stop visualizing it.
Blanche glanced at Demetrius and offered him a warm smile. “I’m not cold, Demetrius,” she answered.
Demetrius smiled back at her as well, but a moment later, he couldn’t resist leaning closer and dropping his voice, “You know, I think Zain is paying even more attention to you now than he did before.”
